In what could be a major twist in Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay’s divorce saga, his wife Sangeetha has withdrawn the petition on Friday.

A section of Tamil media is claiming that such a development has taken place that Sangeetha informed Family Court judge Sujatha that she was withdrawing the petition, seeking dissolution of her marriage.

Speculation surrounds whether Sangeetha, wife of Tamil Nadu CM Vijay, will withdraw her divorce petition ahead of the Chengalpattu Family Court hearing scheduled for today, though no developments have been confirmed by either side.

Vijay-Sangeetha Divorce Has Tamil Nadu CM s Wife Decided To Withdraw The Case

Hence, the Chengalpattu District Family Court has closed the matter. However, neither Vijay nor Sangeetha has confirmed the development.

Earlier in the day, the Chengalpattu Family Court deferred the hearing on the divorce petition with some media reports claiming that the matter will be heard at 3 pm today.

However, the Family Court adjourned the case without specifying the next date of hearing, according to a report in DT Next.

Appearing for the Chief Minister, senior counsel requested a postponement, citing his required presence at the ongoing budget session of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly. The legal team also raised practical difficulties regarding a physical court appearance, citing security protocols and potential traffic disruptions.

Counsel for Sangeetha, appearing via video link from London, strongly objected to the request. Pointing out that the proceedings had already faced multiple postponements over several months, Sangeetha’s legal team urged the court to proceed immediately by recording statements from both parties via video conference.

The matter was adjourned without without announcing the next date of hearing.

The couple, who tied the knot in August 1999, have been married for more than 25 years. They have two children – Jason Sanjay and Divya Shasha. For years, they were seen as one of the more private and stable families in the film fraternity, with Sangeeta largely staying away from the public spotlight while supporting Vijay’s career.

Rumours of strain in the relationship began surfacing in 2023. The absence of Sangeeta’ in Vijay’s political rallies added fuel to the growing speculations on the troubled marriage.

Later the divorce petition, filed by Sangeeta under the provisions of the Special Marriage Act, 1954, came to light where she cited adultery and cruelty as grounds for separation.

In the petition, Sangeeta stated that she discovered in 2021 that Vijay was involved in an extramarital relationship with an actress. This revelation, she claims, marked a turning point in their marriage. The document further alleges that despite assurances from Vijay that the relationship would end, it allegedly continued.

Under Section 27(1)(a) of the Special Marriage Act, a spouse can seek divorce if the other party has committed adultery. Section 27(1)(d) also provides for divorce on the grounds of cruelty. Sangeeta’s plea reportedly invokes both these provisions as the legal basis for the dissolution of the marriage.
