The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has intensified its crackdown on misleading food labels, prompting companies to withdraw or revise health, nutrition and product claims. The regulator has issued more than 150 notices for misleading advertisements, false claims and labelling violations.

FSSAI Crackdown 150 brands

India’s FSSAI intensified its crackdown on misleading food labels, issuing over 150 notices and prompting Mondelez (Bournvita) and Amway to withdraw health, nutrition, and purity claims following a May 2025 advisory.

Mondelez Withdraws Bournvita Claims

Mondelez India Foods, maker of Bournvita and Cadbury products, withdrew health and nutrient-comparison claims flagged by FSSAI and removed advertisements from e-commerce platforms. Bournvita had faced scrutiny in 2023 over sugar content and nutritional claims, its marketing to children.

Amway Removes ‘100 Percent Pure’ Label

Amway India removed “100 Percent” from its “100 Percent Pure Coconut Oil” packaging and promotional material. It discontinued the term “Energy Drink” for its caffeinated XS range, with revised packaging.

Baby Food Claims Also Flagged

Kerala-based Juza Foods agreed to remove claims including “boost immunity”, “support stronger bones” and comparative calcium claims from its baby-food products.

Why FSSAI Action Matters

The crackdown follows FSSAI’s May 2025 advisory against using “100 Percent” claims, which could imply purity or superiority. The regulator has issued 12 notices to e-commerce companies and more than 30 to restaurants and hotels too. This signals tighter scrutiny of food claims.
