Customs officials seized 134 silver coins with apparent archaeological significance among 484 silver coins and one gold coin from two passengers arriving from Doha at the Indira Gandhi International Airport, officials said on Sunday. Air Customs officers intercepted the two passengers after they arrived on September 2.
Customs officials seized 484 silver coins, 134 of which ASI identified as archaeologically significant, along with one gold coin valued at Rs 47.16 lakh from two passengers arriving from Doha at Delhi’s IGI Airport on September 2 for attempting clearance without declaration.
An examination of their baggage led to the recovery and seizure of 20.883 kilograms of gold and silver coins, collectively valued at Rs 47.16 lakh in tariff value, for attempted clearance without declaration, the statement said. The seized goods comprised 484 silver coins and one gold coin, it said.
Of the silver coins recovered, 134 were reported to have apparent archaeological significance by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), according to the statement. The goods were seized under Section 110 of the Customs Act, 1962. It said further investigation is underway.
