Actor and BJP leader Mithun Chakraborty has been appointed West Bengal’s Cultural Advisor with the rank of a cabinet minister, a decision by the state government aimed at developing the region’s film and cultural sector.
This decision has been made by way of a notification by the department of information and cultural affairs and will be effective from today onwards. Earlier, the chief minister of West Bengal, Suvendu Adhikari, had announced that Mithun Chakraborty will become the cultural advisor of the state.
It is an appropriate move by the government of West Bengal considering the fact that the state administration is trying to develop their film and cultural sector.
Mithun Chakraborty Gets Cabinet-Rank Status
As part of his new role, Mithun Chakraborty will serve as a cultural advisor to the state government with the status of a Cabinet Minister.
The announcement was first made by Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari during the foundation stone-laying ceremony of the Uttam Kumar Film Centre in New Town in September. The proposed film centre is part of the state’s efforts to promote Bengali cinema and provide better infrastructure for the film industry.
The government had allocated ₹25 crore for the Uttam Kumar Film Centre, which is planned to include theatres as well as facilities for animation, visual effects and post-production work.
From Bengali Cinema To Politics
Chakraborty Mithun is among the best-known faces of the Indian film industry and has been active in the world of Bengali and Hindi cinema for many years.
In addition, his involvement in politics has seen a considerable increase in recent times. In 2021, Mithun became a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party and emerged as a key campaigner for the party in West Bengal.
He has been campaigning for the party in elections and other political activities.
A New Role In Bengal’s Cultural Sector
The new appointment brings Chakraborty’s film career and political experience into a formal government position related to culture.
His role comes as the state government expands its focus on Bengali cinema, film infrastructure and cultural programmes. The announcement of the Uttam Kumar Film Centre was also linked to the centenary celebrations of legendary Bengali actor Uttam Kumar.
With Chakraborty now appointed as cultural advisor, attention will be on the role he plays in shaping or advising the government’s cultural initiatives and its plans for the state’s film industry.
