Chennai and several parts of Tamil Nadu are likely to receive heavy rain over the next three days, with the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) issuing a yellow alert for the state capital on Monday, October 19.

The weather department has forecast heavy rain at isolated places in 21 districts on Monday, including Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram and Chengalpattu.

Tamil Nadu, including Chennai, is forecast to receive heavy rain over the next three days from October 19, with the Regional Meteorological Centre issuing yellow and orange alerts for various districts due to a cyclonic circulation over the Bay of Bengal.

What Is Causing Rain In Chennai?

In its daily bulletin, the RMC said that an upper air cyclonic circulation over the west-central Bay of Bengal and adjoining coastal areas of Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu has shifted over the southwest Bay of Bengal, off the north Tamil Nadu coast.

The circulation extends up to 5.8 km above mean sea level. A trough associated with the system also extends over the southwest Bay of Bengal off the north Tamil Nadu coast, supporting the likelihood of rainfall across parts of the state.

Rainfall was recorded at isolated places across Tamil Nadu in the 24 hours ending at 8.30 am on Monday. Puducherry also received light rain, while Karaikal remained dry.
