Tamil Nadu, including Chennai, is forecast to receive heavy rain over the next three days from October 19, with the Regional Meteorological Centre issuing yellow and orange alerts for various districts due to a cyclonic circulation over the Bay of Bengal.

While seven districts are under an orange alert for heavy to very heavy rain, the remaining 14 districts, including the Tamil Nadu capital, are under a yellow alert.
Chennai and the neighbouring districts are expected to get heavy rains on Tuesday as well, with the RMC forecasting heavy showers in 22 districts across Tamil Nadu.

On Wednesday, the focus of the heavy rain forecast is expected to shift towards southern Tamil Nadu, with 15 districts under a yellow alert. The list includes Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi, Ramanathapuram, Tenkasi, Virudhunagar, Theni, Dindigul, Madurai, Sivagangai, Pudukkottai, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam and Mayiladuthurai.

What Is Causing Rain In Chennai?
In its daily bulletin, the RMC said that an upper air cyclonic circulation over the west-central Bay of Bengal and adjoining coastal areas of Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu has shifted over the southwest Bay of Bengal, off the north Tamil Nadu coast.
The circulation extends up to 5.8 km above mean sea level. A trough associated with the system also extends over the southwest Bay of Bengal off the north Tamil Nadu coast, supporting the likelihood of rainfall across parts of the state.
