The proposed sale of IDBI Bank has triggered a fresh political confrontation between Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, with both leaders questioning each other’s approach to India’s banking sector.
While Rahul Gandhi has challenged the Narendra Modi government’s decision to sell its stake in IDBI Bank despite the lender returning to profitability, Nirmala Sitharaman has defended the disinvestment plan by pointing to the bank’s troubled financial history under previous Congress governments.
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi opposes IDBI Bank’s proposed sale, citing its return to profitability and employee concerns, while Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman defends the disinvestment, pointing to the bank’s past losses under previous Congress governments and its subsequent revival.
The latest exchange has brought the debate over public sector banking, government ownership and corporate lending practices back into the political spotlight.

Why Is Rahul Gandhi Opposing The IDBI Bank Sale?
Rahul Gandhi has questioned the rationale behind the proposed disinvestment of IDBI Bank, arguing that the government should not sell a financial institution that has recovered from its earlier financial difficulties.
The Congress leader has also raised concerns about the consequences of the transaction for IDBI Bank employees. His objections include questions about job security, reservation-related protections and the government’s reduced ownership in the lender after the proposed sale.
Supporting the employees, Rahul Gandhi shared a letter addressed to IDBI Bank staff, crediting their hard work for the institution’s financial recovery.
Taking a political swipe at the government, Rahul Gandhi argued that the Congress focused on establishing banks to strengthen India’s industrial development, whereas the Narendra Modi government was pursuing their sale.
“During Congress’s time, banks were being created. During Modi’s time, they are being sold,” Rahul Gandhi said.
Nirmala Sitharaman’s Counterattack: Congress Left IDBI Bank In Poor Shape
Responding to Rahul Gandhi’s criticism, Nirmala Sitharaman turned the discussion towards the financial challenges faced by IDBI Bank before the Narendra Modi government took charge.
In her post on X, the Finance Minister alleged that the bank had suffered substantial losses because of lending decisions involving large corporate groups with political connections.
Nirmala Sitharaman named Videocon, Winsome, ABG Shipyard and Kingfisher among the companies associated with loans that eventually turned into bad debts.
According to Nirmala Sitharaman, the NDA government inherited a financially distressed IDBI Bank and subsequently worked towards restoring its position through professional management, better lending practices and capital support.
The Finance Minister said the government had infused more than Rs 25,000 crore into the lender as part of its revival efforts.
She argued that IDBI Bank’s improved financial position was the result of corrective measures undertaken by the Narendra Modi government and that the institution was now ready for its next stage of growth.
Nirmala Sitharaman also accused successive Congress governments of using public sector banks to extend loans without adequate consideration of financial risks.
Why Is The Fairfax Deal Under Discussion?
The proposed transaction involving IDBI Bank and Canadian company Fairfax Financial Holdings has become a major point of disagreement between the government and the Congress.
The Narendra Modi government’s disinvestment plan has raised questions about the future ownership of the lender and the role of private investors in India’s banking sector.
For Rahul Gandhi, the central concern is why a bank that has returned to profitability should be sold and what the decision could mean for its employees.
For Nirmala Sitharaman, the government’s argument centres on the bank’s financial turnaround and the need to move forward after years of accumulated losses and restructuring.
Nirmala Sitharaman And Rahul Gandhi’s Political Battle Continues
The IDBI Bank controversy is the latest in a series of exchanges between Nirmala Sitharaman and Rahul Gandhi.
Earlier this week, the two leaders clashed over Rahul Gandhi’s remarks about the Tata Group. Rahul Gandhi had alleged that the Indian industrial group was being “criminally destroyed” under the Narendra Modi government.
Nirmala Sitharaman rejected the allegation, accusing Rahul Gandhi of repeatedly targeting Indian businesses and entrepreneurs. She also objected to his use of the term criminal to describe commercial and legal matters.
