Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has arrived in Islamabad with a small delegation ahead of a second round of US-Iran talks. He is due to meet Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Gen Syed Asim Munir, as Pakistan supports the process. A US logistics and security team is already in place.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said on Friday that US Special Envoy on the Middle East Steve Witkoff and President Donald Trumps adviser Jared Kushner would be leaving for Pakistan on Saturday for a second round of talks with Iran. A US logistics and security team was already in Islamabad, the official said.

The government official said Araghchi was travelling with a small delegation. The group also included government spokesperson Ismaeel Buqai. The official said that, after key discussions with the Pakistani mediation team, the second round of US-Iran peace talks was expected to take place in Islamabad.

The official said Araghchi would meet Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Gen Syed Asim Munir. The official added that Araghchi may also meet the US officials linked to the second round. The official did not give a timetable for the meetings.

US-Iran talks timeline and earlier round

The first round of US-Iran talks held on April 11 and 12 did not deliver a breakthrough. The outcome triggered more diplomatic activity by host Pakistan, the official said. These efforts aimed to reduce tensions and keep the process moving towards another round of dialogue.

With Araghchi now in Islamabad, officials expected more meetings around the proposed second round. The government official said the US team in Islamabad was there to support logistics and security. Pakistani mediation remained central to preparations for the next talks, according to the official.
