Kolathur Assembly constituency, numbered 13, is one of the 234 legislative segments in Tamil Nadu and falls under the Chennai North Lok Sabha constituency. Situated in Chennai district, the seat has gained significant political attention over the years, largely due to its association with Chief Minister M. K. Stalin, who has represented the constituency since its formation in 2008 following delimitation.

Stalin is now seeking a fourth consecutive term from Kolathur in the upcoming 2026 Assembly elections. His journey in this constituency began in 2011, when he secured victory with a relatively narrow margin of 2,734 votes. However, his electoral dominance has steadily strengthened over time.

Kolathur, a Tamil Nadu constituency represented by Chief Minister M. K. Stalin since 2011, has seen his winning margins significantly increase, reaching 70,384 votes in 2021. For the 2026 elections, it’s a multi-cornered contest, positioning Kolathur as a key indicator of Stalin’s political standing.

In 2016, he expanded his winning margin to 37,730 votes, and by 2021, he achieved a landslide victory with a margin of 70,384 votes, reflecting growing voter confidence in his leadership.

In the 2026 election, Kolathur is witnessing a highly competitive and multi-cornered contest. While Stalin is contesting on behalf of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) has fielded P. Sanathana Krishnan. Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), led by actor-turned-politician Vijay, has nominated V.S. Babu, and Naam Tamilar Katchi (NTK) has put forward Soundrapandian as its candidate. The presence of multiple strong contenders has transformed the election into a high-stakes triangular fight, with new political forces attempting to challenge established party strongholds.

Kolathur has evolved into more than just an urban constituency; it is widely regarded as a barometer of Stalin’s political strength and governance record. The area is often referred to as the “Fish Bowl of Chennai” due to its large ornamental fish market, which reportedly handles over 10 lakh fish daily. This unique identity adds to the constituency’s socio-economic significance within the city.

Electoral data from previous elections highlights Stalin’s strong grip over the constituency. In 2021, he secured 1,05,522 votes, accounting for 61.4% of the total vote share, defeating AIADMK candidate Aadi Rajaram by a massive margin. The voter turnout that year stood at 64.63% out of 2,68,296 registered voters. Similarly, in 2016, Stalin polled 91,303 votes (55.4%) and defeated AIADMK’s J.C.D. Prabhakar by 37,730 votes, with a turnout of 64.26% among 2,61,913 voters. These consistent victories have firmly established Kolathur as a DMK stronghold.

The constituency also reflects Stalin’s broader political journey. His decision to shift from Thousand Lights, a seat he had represented since 1989, to Kolathur in 2011 marked a strategic turning point in his career. Since then, development initiatives in the area have mirrored his governance priorities. His earlier roles as Chennai’s Mayor and later as Minister for Rural Development and Local Administration laid a strong foundation for infrastructure-driven growth.

Initiatives such as the “Singara Chennai” project have contributed to improvements in urban infrastructure, including the construction of flyovers, enhancement of public parks, better waste management systems, and upgrades to corporation schools. These efforts have played a key role in strengthening his voter base in Kolathur.
As the 2026 elections approach, Kolathur stands as a crucial political battleground, reflecting both continuity and change in Tamil Nadu’s evolving political landscape.
