The Delhi government has announced a major set of austerity and fuel-saving measures amid rising global crude oil prices and ongoing tensions in West Asia.

The Delhi government has mandated a two-day weekly work-from-home policy for its employees to save fuel amid rising global crude oil prices, following a similar advisory expected for the private sector.

The new measures include mandatory work-from-home days for government employees, restrictions on official vehicle use, staggered office timings and a push towards public transport.

The announcement was made on Thursday by Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta during a press conference.

The decision comes shortly after Prime Minister Narendra Modi appealed to citizens, government offices and companies to reduce fuel consumption and adopt austerity measures to help the country deal with rising energy costs.

Why Delhi Government Has Taken These Steps

India is facing growing pressure from sharply rising global oil prices due to instability and conflict in West Asia.

The government fears that higher crude oil prices could increase fuel costs, transportation expenses and pressure on India’s foreign exchange reserves.

To reduce fuel consumption and traffic congestion, the Delhi government has now announced several immediate measures that will affect government departments, employees and even the public.

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said the government has prepared a “two-level strategy” to tackle the situation and appealed to both officials and citizens to cooperate.

Two Days Of Mandatory Work From Home

One of the biggest announcements made by the Delhi government is the introduction of mandatory work-from-home arrangements for government employees.

According to the new policy:

  • Government employees will work from home two days every week
  • Departments will implement the system in phases
  • The aim is to reduce daily commuting and fuel usage

The Delhi government also indicated that a similar advisory would soon be issued for the private sector. Officials said companies may be encouraged to adopt hybrid work models wherever possible.

New Restrictions On Government Vehicle Usage

The Delhi government has also announced strict curbs on the use of official vehicles.

As part of the fuel conservation drive:

  • Use of government vehicles has been reduced
  • Petrol allocation for officials has been cut by 20%
  • The existing fuel limit of 200 litres has been reduced further
  • No new government vehicles will be purchased for the next six months

The move is aimed at reducing unnecessary fuel consumption within the administration itself.

‘Metro Monday’ Introduced For Ministers And Officials

The government has also announced a special public transport initiative called “Metro Monday”.

Under this plan:

  • Ministers and government officials will be encouraged to use the Delhi Metro every Monday
  • Public transport usage will be promoted across departments
  • Officials are expected to reduce dependence on private and official cars

The government hopes the initiative will also encourage ordinary citizens to rely more on public transport.

Office Timings Changed To Reduce Traffic

To reduce peak-hour congestion on Delhi roads, office timings across departments have been staggered.

The revised timings are:

  • Delhi government offices: 10:30 am to 7 pm
  • MCD offices: 8:30 am to 5 pm

Officials said staggered timings will help reduce traffic load during busy commuting hours and improve fuel efficiency.

Citizens Asked To Observe ‘No Vehicle Day’

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta also appealed directly to Delhi residents to support the fuel-saving campaign. She urged citizens to voluntarily observe one “No Vehicle Day” every week to reduce unnecessary fuel use and pollution.

The government believes public participation will play a major role in the success of the initiative.

Cargo Transport Shift Encouraged

The Delhi government has also appealed to traders and businesses to reduce dependence on road transport for cargo movement.

Businesses have been encouraged to shift freight transportation from trucks to railway networks wherever possible.

Officials say this could significantly reduce diesel consumption over time.

Transport Allowance Increased

In another move, the government announced a 10% increase in transport allowance for employees. Officials said the step is meant to support employees while encouraging the use of shared and public transportation systems.

PM Modi’s Appeal Behind The Measures

The latest decisions come after PM Narendra Modi urged people and institutions to conserve fuel during uncertain global economic conditions.

The Prime Minister had earlier appealed to:

  • Reduce unnecessary petrol and diesel usage
  • Adopt work-from-home models wherever possible
  • Avoid excessive spending
  • Use public transport more frequently

The Centre has linked the appeal to rising global oil prices caused by tensions in West Asia and disruptions in international energy markets.

Delhi Becomes One Of The First States To Act

With these announcements, Delhi has become one of the first governments in the country to formally introduce mandatory work-from-home measures and fuel restrictions after PM Modi’s appeal.

Experts say other states may also introduce similar measures if crude oil prices continue rising in the coming weeks.

For now, Delhi’s new policy marks a major shift toward fuel conservation, hybrid work culture and public transport-driven urban management during a period of global energy uncertainty.
