Weather conditions remain favourable for continued thunderstorm activity over Bengaluru, with more rain likely in the next 12 to 24 hours. Weather trackers indicate a 35-40% chance of thunderstorms developing in and around the city, raising the possibility of more unseasonal April showers in the coming days.

However, the relief is expected to be brief. Even as evening thunderstorms bring temporary cooling, daytime temperatures are set to remain high. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has indicated that while April showers may continue intermittently, heat levels will stay elevated.

Bengaluru may receive unseasonal April showers with a 35-40% chance of thunderstorms in the next 12-24 hours, even as daytime temperatures approach 39°C next week, leading to increased heat-related illnesses reported by local clinics.

The city is already witnessing a sharp rise in temperatures. Bengaluru recorded 35.4°C on Thursday, the highest so far this month and above normal levels. With the mercury likely to climb further in the coming days, the city is heading into an intense summer phase, marked by a mix of scorching afternoons and short bursts of rain.

Bengaluru Rain First Spell Of April Showers Likely in Next 12-24 Hours But Mercury May Still Touch 39 C

However, it isn’t just the rising numbers on the thermometer that are causing concern; it’s the oppressive “feels-like” temperature throughout the day, driven by dry westerly winds and the city’s expanding concrete footprint. The impact is already visible in the city’s healthcare sector. Doctors report that local clinics are being flooded with patients showing symptoms of heat-related illnesses.

“We are seeing a premature surge in dehydration, heat exhaustion, and viral fevers,” said a city-based general practitioner. “This is a trend that typically picks up in late April, but the early intensity of this year’s heatwave has caught many residents off-guard.”

Why Bengaluru Is Feeling Hotter

The current spell is being driven by dry westerly winds that dominate April mornings. These winds limit cloud formation, reducing the chances of the brief showers that usually bring some relief.

At the same time, urban factors such as expanding concrete surfaces and traffic congestion are adding to the heat, making conditions feel harsher than the recorded temperature.

Weather stations across the city, including HAL and the airport zone, have also reported temperatures around 35°C, slightly above seasonal averages.

Doctors say the increase in cases is gradual but noticeable. Most patients are reporting dehydration, fatigue, dizziness and muscle cramps. While these are mild for now, prolonged exposure to heat can lead to more serious conditions such as heat exhaustion or heat stroke.

Medical experts are advising people to avoid stepping out during peak afternoon hours, especially between 11 am and 3 pm, and to stay well hydrated.

Temperatures May Rise Further

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has indicated that dry weather conditions are likely to continue for the next few days. Temperatures could move closer to 39°C before any relief arrives.

Some change is expected around April 11 or 12, when cloud cover and light evening showers may bring slight relief. However, daytime temperatures are still expected to remain in the mid-30s.

The district administration has cautioned that rising temperatures could lead to heat stress if precautions are not followed. Residents have been asked to stay updated with official advisories and take basic measures to stay safe.

In suspected cases of heat stroke, the person should be moved to a cooler place immediately, given fluids if conscious, and cooled using wet cloths while seeking medical help.

What Residents Can Do

Simple precautions can help manage the heat. Drinking water regularly, wearing light cotton clothing, and avoiding direct sunlight during peak hours can reduce risk.

Cooling options such as buttermilk, lemon water and tender coconut water, along with water-rich fruits, are also being recommended.

Children, the elderly, pregnant women, outdoor workers and those with existing health conditions such as heart disease or hypertension are more vulnerable and need to take extra care.

Residents have also been advised to ensure that pets have access to shade and water, especially during the afternoon.
