Punjab has cleared a major refresh of the Kisan Credit Card system, reshaping how farm loans work. The new framework raises credit limits, extends approval validity and promotes digital access, with officials expecting support for lakhs of cultivators across different crops in the state.
Credit ceilings for major crops see sharp revisions. Wheat farmers now receive ₹30,000 per acre instead of ₹24,380. Sugarcane growers can access up to ₹1 lakh per acre. Vegetable and horticulture producers get higher ranges, rising from ₹32,000 to as much as ₹1.57 lakh per acre.
Punjab’s Kisan Credit Card system is reformed with higher credit limits (e.g., wheat ₹30,000/acre), digital access, and a ₹2,000/acre provision for residue management, including new crops like dragon fruit, marking the first major update in 26 years.
Kisan Credit Card reforms and higher crop-wise credit in Punjab
The government has linked the Kisan Credit Card reforms with sustainability aims. A separate ₹2,000 per acre provision supports crop residue and stubble management. This amount targets improved handling of farm waste and encourages farmers to adopt methods that reduce burning of stubble.
Beyond traditional crops, the revised KCC scheme now covers several high-value and emerging varieties. Dragon fruit, bamboo, poplar and lemongrass are included for the first time. Growers of these crops will now find it easier to obtain institutional credit using the Kisan Credit Card platform.

Kisan Credit Card reforms and digital access for Punjab farmers
The reforms give the Kisan Credit Card a digital backbone. Applications, approvals and account management move to online platforms. Farmers can draw funds through ATMs, UPI and other digital banking channels, which is aimed at reducing queues, paperwork and delays at branches.
Punjab has also relaxed how long a Kisan Credit Card remains valid. Approvals will now last for six years. During this period, limits will be revised automatically each year, based on eligibility, reducing repeated visits to banks for renewals or enhancements.
Announcing the Kisan Credit Card reforms, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann highlighted that this is the first major change to the scheme in 26 years. The Punjab government expects the upgraded credit structure and digital access to support farm operations and ease financial pressure on cultivators.
