India’s Sachin Yadav placed eighth in a 10-man javelin field on his Diamond League debut, managing 79.18m, well below his 86.27m personal best. He opened with a foul and did not reach the final round. Sri Lanka’s Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage won with a 92.62m throw, the second-longest by an Asian.

Yadav, 26, stayed well short of the personal best of 86.27m from the Tokyo World Championships last year. Sachin Yadav had placed fourth at that event. Sachin Yadav’s season best stood at 81.95m from April. That mark came at Indian Athletics Series 3 in New Delhi.

Diamond League javelin throw: Sachin Yadav’s series and format

Sachin Yadav opened with a foul and then recorded 79.18m, 77.02m, 76.62m and 75.54. The sequence left Sachin Yadav eighth after five rounds. Under Diamond League rules, only the top three after round five get a sixth attempt. As a result, Sachin Yadav did not take a final throw.

Diamond League javelin throw: Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage’s 92.62m win

Sri Lanka’s Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage won with 92.62m in the second round. It was Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage’s first 90m-plus throw and first Diamond League title. The distance was the second-longest by an Asian. It fell just behind Arshad Nadeem’s 92.97m from the Paris Olympics.

Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage’s throw also moved past Chao-Tsun Cheng’s 91.36m and Neeraj Chopra’s 90.23m. Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage became the fourth Asian to cross 90m. Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage was also the 28th athlete overall to reach the mark. The 90m barrier remains a key benchmark in men’s javelin.

Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage arrived as the season leader after 89.37m in March. The season has included several strong results across meets. Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage finished second in Rabat on May 31 with 85.97m. Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage also won the Kip Keino Classic in Nairobi with 89.28m.

Diamond League javelin throw: other medallists and Neeraj Chopra’s absence

Anderson Peters of Grenada took second with 83.91m in round five. Curtis Thompson of the United States placed third with 83.89m. Keshorn Walcott of Trinidad and Tobago ended fourth with 83.45m in round four. The Rome meet was Yadav’s first international event since the 2025 World Championships.

Neeraj Chopra did not compete in Rome. Neeraj Chopra is training in Bienne, Switzerland, after time in Turkiye. Officials have not confirmed when Neeraj Chopra will start the season. The next Diamond League meet with men’s javelin is in Doha, Qatar, on June 19. The event moved from May 8 due to conflict in the Middle East.
