The investigation into the murder of Delhi University assistant professor Debosmita Paul continues, but several questions remain unanswered. While reports say that Delhi Police has claimed to have cracked the case and arrested suspects from West Bengal, the victim’s family says they are still unaware of several details that have surfaced in media reports.

While Delhi Police arrested suspects from West Bengal for DU professor Debosmita Paul’s murder, her family disputes the property motive theory and questions the investigation’s transparency and initial response.

Speaking to Oneindia, Debosmita Paul’s parents shared their concerns about some of the theories currently being discussed regarding the motive behind the murder.

Family Says Ex-Husband Being Questioned, But Nothing Suspicious Found

According to the family, Debosmita’s former husband, who had been living in Bengaluru and later moved to Pune in 2024, is currently in Delhi and has also been questioned by investigators.

However, the family said they have not been informed of any evidence suggesting his involvement.

“Police are questioning many people connected to the case. As far as we know, nothing suspicious has emerged against him so far,” a family member told Oneindia.

Debosmita and her husband had reportedly separated in 2022 after several years of marriage.

Family Rejects Property Acquisition Theory

One of the major theories cited in police reports is that the accused were tenants in a property owned by Debosmita’s family in West Bengal and wanted to acquire the house.
However, the victim’s parents said they have not been informed by police about any such motive.

“The police have not told us anything about this theory. We do not know whether it is true or false. The investigation will reveal that,” they said.

The family also questioned the logic behind the claim.

According to them, the tenants had never stayed in the property for an unusually long period and had never shown any interest in acquiring it.

“They have been tenants for only around two years. We have never kept any tenant for very long. Usually people stay for two to two-and-a-half years. The lease agreements were renewed on time and there was never any dispute regarding ownership,” the family said.

Property Belongs To Victim’s Mother, Family Clarifies

The parents further clarified that the property in question is not owned by Debosmita herself.

According to them, the house is in the name of Debosmita’s mother and came into the family’s possession only after the death of Debosmita’s maternal grandfather.
“After my father passed away, the property came to me. It is in my name. Earlier, my father lived with us in Delhi after my mother passed away. Later, the property was given on rent,” Debosmita’s mother said.

The family maintained that there had never been any indication that the tenants were attempting to claim ownership of the property.

‘Why Would They Send Us Fruits If They Wanted The House?’

The parents also pointed to the cordial relationship they shared with the tenants.
According to them, the tenants often sent fruits from trees growing on the property and maintained friendly relations with the family.

“They were so friendly that they would send fruits from their trees to us through transport. If someone wanted to grab a property, why would they maintain such a relationship?” the parents asked.

The family said they personally do not believe the tenants would commit such an act, though they stressed that the investigation should establish the truth.

Questions Raised Over Initial Police Response

The victim’s parents also expressed concerns regarding the initial response after the crime was discovered.

According to them, police did not immediately arrive when the first information was given.
“When we first informed the authorities, police did not come immediately. After a few hours, residents and society members helped break open the door. Only after we informed them that a murder had taken place did the police arrive, around half an hour later,” the family alleged.

The parents also claimed that senior officers arrived only after representatives from a social organisation visited the scene.

These claims have not been independently verified.

Family Says Closure Alone Will Not Bring Justice

Responding to reports suggesting that police solved the case within a few days, the family said they are more concerned about understanding what actually happened than how quickly the case is closed.

“What difference will closure make? Our child is not coming back,” the grieving parents said.

They added that they want a thorough investigation and complete transparency from the authorities.

What Police Have Claimed So Far

According to Delhi Police, Debosmita Paul was found murdered in her flat at Satyam Apartments in East Delhi’s Vasundhara Enclave.

Following a series of raids, police arrested Ramprasad Das and Banshree Das from Bardhaman in West Bengal. Their minor son has also reportedly been detained for questioning.

Investigators claim the accused travelled to Delhi under the pretext of meeting the professor and entered her apartment wearing masks.

Police sources allege that the couple brought a weapon with them, murdered the victim inside the flat and later changed clothes before leaving in a waiting cab.

Officials further claim that the accused were tenants at a property linked to the victim’s family in West Bengal and that disputes over the property may have been the motive behind the crime.

Family Awaits Answers

As the investigation continues, Debosmita Paul’s family says many of the details being reported publicly have not been officially shared with them.

For now, they remain focused on seeking answers about what happened to their daughter and hope the ongoing investigation will uncover the complete truth behind the shocking murder that has shaken both Delhi and West Bengal.
