Saif Ali Khan has given more than 30 years to the Bollywood industry and still remains among the most enduring stars. The actor’s career has been marked by amazing performances and successful films. However, he has admitted that his journey to stardom was far from smooth.

The actor, who was recently seen in Kartavya, has often spoken about his experience as a newcomer. He acknowledged that he wasn’t at his best during his initial films.
How Saif Survived In The Industry?
Saif mentioned that there was a period when many actors were reluctant to take up the kind of films he was offered. Eventually, this action turned out to be in his favour. He explained that he did not receive one prestigious project after another in his career.
Instead, he experienced setbacks and a prolonged struggle before finding his footing.
Saif noted that audiences were generally more patient with actors than they are today, while comparing two different eras. He believes that during that period, viewers were willing to give performers time to evolve and improve. However, in the current entertainment landscape, this luxury seems to have disappeared.
Turning Point In Saif’s Professional Life
Saif recalled being casted in legendary filmmaker Yash Chopra’s film and remarked it, as a turning point in his career. While the opportunity was significant, the project failed to make the impact he had hoped for. He had lost momentum in his career after that difficult phase.
His fortunes began to change with Yeh Dillagi. It was this film that helped audiences notice him again. Saif shared screen with Akshay Kumar and managed to reconnect with viewers. Gradually, he rebuilds his standing in the industry. He credits hard work and perseverance that later led him to films such as Main Khiladi Tu Anari, which further strengthened his position in Bollywood.
‘Today’s Industry Is Less Forgiving’
The conversation also turned to the challenges faced by the younger generation of actors, including his children, Sara Ali Khan and Ibrahim Ali Khan. Saif acknowledged that today’s industry is less forgiving than the one he entered decades ago.
He pointed out that aspiring actors are now expected to arrive fully prepared from day one. Training, physical transformation, dance skills and media awareness have become essential components of an actor’s launch. He cited Hrithik Roshan as an example of someone who prepared himself before making his debut. Such preparation has now become almost mandatory.
At the same time, Saif admitted that it is complicating to determine when a young actor is truly ready. The allure of the big screen is powerful, especially for those in their early twenties. This makes it difficult for newcomers to objectively assess their preparedness.
Saif mentioned that although competition always existed, public scrutiny is now harsher than ever. Hence, it leaves very little room for mistakes or growth.
For Saif, survival in the film business has never been about talent alone. It has required resilience and adaptability. These qualities still remain important, even in an industry that is changing dramatically.
