Former Tamil Nadu BJP chief K Annamalai, who had got a lot of visibility to the saffron party in the land dominated by the Dravidian politics during his tenure as the state chief, has quit the BJP.
The BJP has accepted his resignation on Friday.”The National President of the Bharatiya Janata Party, Hon’ble Shri Nitin Nabin, has accepted the resignation submitted by the Tamil Nadu Ex. State President, Shri K. Annamalai from the primary membership of the Party,” the statement from the party read.
K Annamalai, the former state chief for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) based in Tamil Nadu, has officially resigned his position, marking his departure from the national political party.
This is seen as a major blow to the BJP, which has been trying hard to leave an imprint in the Tamil Nadu politics.
Annamalai has reportedly been dissatisfied since being replaced by Nainar Nagenthran as the state BJP president. His discomfort is also said to stem from the BJP’s decision to revive its alliance with the AIADMK ahead of the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. While he opted out of contesting the recent state elections, he remained actively involved in campaigning for the party.
According to reports, the former IPS officer had been contemplating an exit from the BJP for several months. Sources close to Annamalai suggest he believes Tamil Nadu’s political landscape has undergone a major transformation following actor Vijay’s emergence as a significant political force.
The sources further indicate that Annamalai is exploring the possibility of launching a people’s movement, fuelling speculation that it could eventually evolve into a full-fledged political party. While he has not confirmed any such plans, Annamalai had earlier hinted that greater clarity on his future course of action would be revealed soon.
Annamalai entered electoral politics in 2021, making his Assembly election debut from the Aravakurichi constituency in Karur district. He was defeated in that contest and later suffered another setback in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
Despite his electoral losses, Annamalai built a strong profile within the BJP through his aggressive criticism of the ruling DMK. His sharp attacks initially resonated not only with BJP workers but also with the AIADMK, then an alliance partner. However, relations between the two parties began to deteriorate when Annamalai increasingly targeted AIADMK leaders, prompting unease within the regional party.
The rift eventually culminated in the AIADMK severing ties with the BJP ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. The campaign period witnessed an escalating war of words between the two sides. AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami dismissed Annamalai as a “publicity hound,” while the BJP leader hit back by comparing Palaniswami’s decision to end the alliance to the classic “sour grapes” fable.
With speculation continuing over his next move, Annamalai’s political future remains a subject of intense interest in Tamil Nadu’s rapidly evolving political landscape.
