Himanta Biswa Sarma is preparing to take oath as Assam Chief Minister for a second straight term on May 12, following the NDA’s decisive win in the Assam Assembly elections, with Narendra Modi scheduled to attend the swearing-in ceremony as chief guest.

The event in Guwahati is being planned as a large public ceremony, with senior BJP leaders from several states expected to join. The gathering is seen as a show of strength for the BJP and its allies after their strong performance in Assam.

Himanta Biswa Sarma will take oath as Assam Chief Minister for a second term on May 12 in Guwahati following the BJP-led NDA’s victory with 102 seats, attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Under Himanta Biswa Sarma, the BJP-led NDA secured 102 of Assam’s 126 Assembly seats, giving the alliance a clear majority. The BJP, on its own, crossed the halfway mark in the Assembly for the first time, marking a key political moment for the party in the state.

The landslide result is widely read as strong backing for Himanta Biswa Sarma’s style of administration and political strategy. Since becoming Chief Minister, Sarma has emerged as a central figure for the BJP in the Northeast, helping expand the party’s reach across several northeastern states.

Preparations in Guwahati for the May 12 swearing-in ceremony are underway. Assam Chief Secretary Ravi Kota chaired a high-level review meeting with senior police and civil officials to examine readiness for Narendra Modi’s visit and to coordinate different aspects of the event.

Officials discussed security planning, traffic control, venue facilities, protocol arrangements and cooperation between departments. Authorities have been directed to enforce tight security and ensure the programme runs without disruption, given the presence of national leaders and large crowds expected at the oath-taking ceremony.

Several Union ministers, chief ministers and deputy chief ministers from BJP-governed states, along with industry and business representatives, are likely to attend. Himanta Biswa Sarma’s second term is expected to strengthen the BJP’s hold in Assam and further support the party’s influence across the broader Northeast region.
