Adani Green Energy Ltd (AGEL), India’s largest renewable energy company, has expanded its operational Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) capacity at Khavda, Gujarat, to 6.63 gigawatt-hours (GWh). The figure was 3.55 GWh in June 2026.

With this addition, AGEL accounts for more than 50 per cent of India’s operational BESS capacity of about 12.6 GWh. The company says the milestone consolidates Khavda’s position as the world’s largest operational battery energy storage installation at a single location.

Adani Green Energy Limited reports Khavda’s Battery Energy Storage System has reached 6.63 GWh, accounting for over half of India’s operational BESS capacity. The milestone underpins a 30 GW Khavda renewables project and demonstrates improved grid reliability, higher dispatchability, and accelerated energy storage deployment across the country.

AGEL reached the 6.63 GWh mark within 14 months of starting on-site BESS construction at Khavda. The latest capacity addition was commissioned in just 10 months from the start of its construction.

The BESS is integrated with AGEL’s renewable energy development at Khavda, where the company is building a 30 GW renewable energy plant across 538 square kilometres of barren land.

*What 6.63 GWh means*

According to the company, the installation can:

– store enough clean energy to power around two million homes a day – support the peak electricity demand of cities like Nagpur, Patna or Vizag for several hours – match the battery storage capacity of more than 150,000 mid-sized EVs, based on a 40 kWh battery pack per vehicle – store enough energy daily to meet almost twice the Delhi Metro’s estimated daily electricity requirement

*”Significant milestone”*

Sagar Adani, Executive Director, Adani Green Energy, said: “Reaching 6.63 GWh of operational battery storage in just 14 months is a significant milestone for AGEL and India’s clean energy transition. At this scale, storage can make renewable power firmer, more reliable and dispatchable when the grid needs it. As India’s power demand grows, we will continue to scale energy storage solutions, both battery and pumped storage, to support a more resilient, lower-carbon grid.”

*Technology and execution*

The company credits advanced project controls, digital monitoring systems, agile construction management and partnerships with leading global BESS equipment manufacturers for keeping to aggressive timelines while maintaining quality and safety standards.

The system uses lithium-ion battery technology, integrated with an Energy Management System (EMS) and automated telemetry. These manage charging and discharging, optimise performance and support grid services. Battery storage can improve grid stability, manage peak demand, reduce energy curtailment and allow renewable power to be delivered when required.

*Targets ahead*

AGEL says it is on track to add over 10 GWh of battery storage in FY 2026-27 and is targeting 50 GWh over the next five years. It is also pursuing pumped storage projects as part of its strategy to build large-scale, firm and dispatchable renewable power capacity.

*Why storage matters for India*

India has set a target of 500 GW of installed capacity from non-fossil fuel sources by 2030 and has pledged to cut the emission intensity of its GDP by 45 per cent by 2030, from 2005 levels. Because solar and wind generation varies with time of day, season and location, storage is seen as key to grid stability and uninterrupted supply.

Battery storage lets power generated when the sun shines or the wind blows be stored and used during peak hours or after sunset. It also helps with peak shifting, carbon emission reduction, deferral of transmission and distribution capex, and energy arbitrage.

Demand is expected to grow sharply. The Central Electricity Authority’s National Electricity Plan 2023 projects India’s energy storage requirement at 82.37 GWh in 2026-27 (47.65 GWh from pumped storage and 34.72 GWh from BESS). This is expected to rise to 411.4 GWh by 2031-32 (175.18 GWh pumped storage, 236.22 GWh BESS), and to 2,380 GWh by 2047 (540 GWh pumped storage, 1,840 GWh BESS).

The Ministry of Power has also notified a trajectory for Energy Storage Obligations, rising from 1 per cent in FY 2023-24 to 4 per cent by FY 2029-30, with an annual increase of 0.5 per cent. The obligation counts as fulfilled only if at least 85 per cent of the energy stored comes from renewable sources annually.

*Other BESS projects in India*

Other notable projects include ACME Solar’s operational capacity of about 4,160 MWh in Rajasthan, Juniper’s 400 MWh system at Fatehgarh, Rajasthan, L&T (311 MWh), ReNew (250 MWh) and Tata (120 MWh), based on public disclosures by the entities.

*About Adani Green Energy Limited*

AGEL develops, owns and operates utility-scale grid-connected solar, wind, hybrid and energy storage projects. It has an operating renewable portfolio of 20.76 GW and 6.63 GWh of battery storage across 12 states, and targets 50 GW by 2030. The company is building the world’s largest renewable energy plant (30 GW) at Khavda, covering 538 square kilometres, an area five times larger than Paris.
