The Centre has assured the Supreme Court that it will deliver on its promise to compensate the families of the students who died by suicide after the cancellation of NEET-UG 2026 examination.
The assurance was made during a hearing relating to FIRs against the students who were involved in protests between July 20 and July 25. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta told a bench with Chief Justice of India Surya Kant at the helm, that the government would formulate a policy of providing compensation and sought three months to finalise the modalities.
The Centre assured the Supreme Court it will compensate families of students who died by suicide following the NEET-UG 2026 cancellation and withdraw FIRs against July 20-25 protesters, prompting the court to order closure of these FIRs and bar new ones.

The assurance was part of commitment made by the Centre to the leaders of the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) on July 25. According to the Solicitor General the government had also assured the protesters that the cases registered against them would be withdrawn and that no fresh FIRs would be filed in connection with the specified protests.
Subsequently the Supreme Court directed that the FIRs registered across states and Union Territories relating to the July 20-25 protests should not be pursued and must be treated as closed. It also barred the authorities from registering fresh FIRs over incidents that were connected with the protests that had taken place during that period.
The directions of the court led to the withdrawal of the planned September 5 protest march by the CJP in Delhi. CJP co-convener Saurav Das informed the bench that the organisation had taken the decision in view of the Centre’s assurances and the Supreme Court’s order.
Das said that the group would now look forward to the government complying with the commitments made to the protesters.
The Centre’s compensation assurance was specifically related to families who had lost students following the cancellation of NEET-UG 2026. The government has been given three months to work out the details of the proposed policy, including its implementation framework.
