The Central Government has taken major action amid the ongoing controversy surrounding the Central Board of Secondary Education’s (CBSE) On-Screen Marking (OSM) system.
The Centre has transferred the CBSE Chairman and Secretary and constituted an inquiry committee to investigate the procurement of On-Screen Marking (OSM) services due to scrutiny of the evaluation system.
On Tuesday, the Centre transferred the CBSE Chairman and Secretary and announced the formation of a one-member inquiry committee to examine the procurement of OSM services by the board.
The move comes at a time when many students and parents have raised concerns about the evaluation process used in this year’s board examinations.
CBSE’s Top Officials Transferred
Rahul Singh, who served as the Chairman and chief executive of CBSE, has been transferred. As the head of the board, he was responsible for overseeing its administration and overall functioning.

CBSE Secretary Himanshu Gupta has also been transferred. Gupta handled several important responsibilities, including administration, legal matters, audits, and public relations.
The transfers were announced as questions continued to be raised about the implementation of the On-Screen Marking system.
Inquiry Committee Formed
The Centre has constituted a one-member committee to investigate the procurement of OSM services by CBSE.
The committee will be headed by S. Radha Chauhan, Chairperson of the Capacity Building Commission. She has been authorised to seek assistance from officials and departments whenever required during the inquiry.
The committee has been asked to submit its report to the Department of Personnel and Training within one month.
Why Is the OSM System Under Scrutiny?
The action follows complaints from students who claimed they received lower-than-expected marks in the 2026 board examinations.
Several students have questioned the On-Screen Marking system, under which answer sheets are scanned and evaluated digitally rather than being assessed physically in most cases.
The concerns have led to a wider debate over the evaluation process and whether the system affected the assessment of answer scripts.
With the inquiry now underway, the committee is expected to examine the procurement process related to OSM services and submit its findings to the government within the specified timeframe.
