Residents of Chennai can expect partly cloudy skies along with light rain accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning over the next two days, according to the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Chennai.
While the city may receive only light rainfall, temperatures are likely to remain above normal levels. The maximum temperature in Chennai is expected to hover between 38°C and 39°C on June 17 and 37°C and 38°C on June 18, while minimum temperatures are likely to remain around 28°C to 29°C.
Chennai forecasts light rain, thunderstorms, and lightning for June 17-18, with temperatures staying above normal around 37-39°C. The RMC also issued heavy rainfall warnings for isolated areas in several inner districts of Tamil Nadu.

The weather department has forecast light rain with thunderstorms and lightning for Chennai and its neighbouring areas on both days. The city recorded a maximum temperature of 39.6°C during the past 24 hours, which was 2.4°C above normal. At Chennai Airport, the mercury touched 40.5°C, about 3°C above normal, highlighting the prevailing heat despite rain chances.
Heavy Rain Warning for Interior Districts
The RMC has issued a heavy rainfall warning for several districts across Tamil Nadu.
On the first day, heavy rain is likely at isolated places over The Nilgiris, Dindigul, Theni, Madurai, Sivaganga, Thanjavur, Tiruchirappalli, Perambalur, Salem and Ramanathapuram districts.
On the following day, heavy rainfall is expected at isolated locations in The Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Theni, Dindigul, Madurai, Erode, Namakkal, Karur, Tiruchirappalli, Pudukkottai, Sivaganga, Ariyalur and Perambalur districts.
Temperatures Remain Above Normal
The RMC noted that maximum temperatures rose by up to 2°C at isolated places across Tamil Nadu during the past 24 hours. In many locations, temperatures were 2°C to 3°C above normal.
Madurai Airport recorded the state’s highest maximum temperature at 40.8°C, followed by Chennai Airport (40.5°C) and Tiruttani (40.2°C).
Among the hill stations, Kodaikanal recorded the lowest minimum temperature at 13.7°C, while Coimbatore Airport registered the lowest minimum temperature in the plains at 23.4°C.

Despite the possibility of showers, Chennai is likely to continue experiencing hot and humid conditions, with daytime temperatures remaining close to the 40°C mark. The expected thunderstorms could, however, provide some relief from the prevailing heat.
