A magnitude 5.1 earthquake struck Longchang City in Neijiang, Sichuan province, on Friday, according to the China Earthquake Networks Center (CENC). The earthquake occurred at 1:13 pm local time, with the epicentre located at a depth of 13 km, according to the latest update.
The China Earthquake Networks Center reported that a 5.1 magnitude earthquake occurred on Friday, impacting Longchang City in Neijiang, Sichuan province, China.
The earthquake struck as China continues to deal with the fallout from devastating floods and landslides near its border with Nepal. A separate barrier lake formed near the confluence of the Chhochen Khola and Purepu Tsangpo rivers in Nepal has also raised concerns of another major flood.
Chinese authorities have been closely monitoring the barrier lake, which was estimated to contain around 2 million cubic metres of water. The lake has continued to receive inflows, prompting warnings that a breach could send a large volume of water downstream into Nepal.
Meanwhile, as rescue and relief operations continue following the devastating floods in Tibet and Nepal, Nepal Police has issued an alert over a fresh threat from the Tibetan side.
The police have urged all security personnel, rescue workers and members of the public involved in rescue and relief operations to remain on immediate alert and move to safer locations.
Nepal Police has also asked people to inform others in the affected areas and ensure that they move to safe places.
