Dehradun police have registered an FIR against Haryanvi folk singer Masoom Sharma over alleged indecent and objectionable language used on stage at an event at DAV Post Graduate College. The case follows social media videos and a student organisation complaint. Former Uttarakhand chief minister Harish Rawat urged the government to set an SOP for such events.

Dehradun Superintendent of Police City Pramod Kumar said the FIR was filed late Sunday night. The case was registered at the Kotwali Dalanwala police station. Police said the complaint came from Pranchal Nauni of the Satyam Shivam student organisation at the college.

Masoom Sharma FIR and complaint details

According to the complaint, the words used during the programme upset students and others in the audience. The event was organised by a students union at DAV Post Graduate College. Police said the organisers tried to manage the situation after feeling uneasy about the conduct.

Police said the decision followed social media clips and the written complaint. A video of the incident later spread widely online. The alleged remarks were made during the programme on Saturday evening, police said, and the FIR followed the next night.

Masoom Sharma FIR and BNS sections applied

Police said an investigation started after the FIR under relevant Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita sections. These include Section 296 for obscene acts or songs in public places. Police also cited Section 352 on intentional insult, Section 79 on intent to outrage a woman’s modesty, and Section 351(3) on serious criminal threats.

Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami also attended the college event, police said. However, Pushkar Singh Dhami left the venue before the alleged misconduct occurred. Umesh Kumar, the Independent MLA from Khanpur in Haridwar, was present during the programme.

Masoom Sharma FIR and Harish Rawat response

Senior Congress leader and former chief minister Harish Rawat raised concerns over such incidents. Rawat said the state government should set a clear standard operating procedure for similar events. Rawat also said Rawat had attended a student union function the previous day.

Rawat said meeting students at such gatherings remained a matter of pride. \”However, I am deeply concerned about the nature of the songs being performed on stage there and the kind of cultural gunpowder being introduced into Uttarakhand and the potential impact this will have on our culture, dialects, songs, and music,\” Rawat said.

Police said the FIR against Masoom Sharma was based on the complaint and the videos shared online. The case remains under investigation at Kotwali Dalanwala police station. Officials said the alleged stage remarks led to claims of hurt sentiments among students and members of the public present.
