A six-storey building being used as a paying guest accommodation collapsed in Delhi’s Satya Niketan on Sunday afternoon, forcing a large-scale rescue operation in the area which is known for its concentration of students. The structure came down at around 1:30 pm, with several people feared trapped under the concrete and metal debris. Officials and emergency teams were immediately deployed to search for survivors.

A building collapsed in Delhi’s Satya Niketan area around 1:30 pm on Sunday, trapping several people; rescue teams have freed one person from the debris and continue searching for others.

Rescue Teams Search Debris for Survivors

Delhi Police, the fire department, ambulance services and disaster response personnel reached the site as rescue efforts began. At least 12 fire tenders were sent to Satya Niketan, while an excavator was brought in to clear the rubble. Additional machinery was also being arranged to remove heavy slabs and girders.

Officials reported that six people had been rescued, although Delhi Police initially put the confirmed rescue figure at two. Authorities have not yet given a confirmed number of people trapped inside.

The rescue effort was also supported by local residents, some of whom began clearing debris with their hands before heavy equipment arrived. Witnesses said cries for help could be heard from beneath the collapsed structure.

Student Accommodation Raises Concern

The building was reportedly operating as a 75-bed PG accommodation. An eyewitness said around 50 students may have been inside when the collapse occurred, although authorities have not confirmed that figure. Another eyewitness identified the facility as a men’s PG called ‘Hostel Daze’.

The incident has caused particular concern because Satya Niketan is close to Delhi University’s South Campus and houses a substantial number of students and paying guests.

The owner of the collapsed building is reported to live in Gurugram. The reason for the structural failure has not yet been established, and officials are expected to investigate whether construction or safety norms were followed.

Government Orders Emergency Response

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said the government is closely monitoring the situation and that agencies were working on a war footing. The building next to the collapsed structure was evacuated as a precaution.

“The adjacent building has been vacated as a precautionary measure. Every possible effort is being made to safely rescue those trapped and provide immediate assistance to the affected families. The situation is being closely monitored, and all concerned agencies are working in coordination. The safety and well-being of every citizen remain our highest priority,” she said.

Delhi Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu also said Delhi Police, Delhi Fire Service and the Delhi Disaster Management Authority to coordinate the rescue operation.
