National Capital- Delhi experienced an unusual dip in temperature this week, bringing much-needed relief from early summer heat.

Delhi recorded its lowest April maximum temperature in 11 years at 28.2°C on April 8, due to a western disturbance causing rain and winds. While this relief is temporary, temperatures are forecast to rise sharply from Friday, with Delhi’s air quality improving to a satisfactory AQI of 93.

Due to a blanket of clouds, gusty winds, and light scattered rain, the maximum temperature dropped to 28.2°C on Wednesday (April 8). According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), this is the lowest April temperature recorded in the last 11 years.

At Safdarjung, which is the city’s main weather station, the temperature was 6.9 degrees below normal. The last time Delhi saw a lower maximum temperature in April was on April 23, 2016, when it touched 27.2°C.

Weather Forecast for April 9

For Thursday (April 9), the weather in Delhi is expected to remain relatively pleasant. The daytime temperature may rise slightly to around 31°C, while the night temperature could drop to nearly 15°C.

Winds are likely to be strong, blowing at speeds of 30-40 km/h, especially from morning to afternoon. In some areas, stronger gusts may also be felt. Humidity levels are expected to range between 50% and 80%, which might cause slight discomfort during the day.

The sky will be clear to partly cloudy, with a chance of light rain in a few areas. These conditions may help in keeping temperatures under control. People are advised to stay hydrated and carry water, especially when stepping out during the day.

Rain and Thunderstorm Alert Across India

The IMD has issued a weather alert for the next 24 hours, warning of thunderstorms and rainfall in several parts of the country. People have been advised to check weather updates before going outdoors.

According to IMD scientist Dr Akhil Srivastava, the current weather changes are due to a western disturbance affecting north India. This system is currently active over north Punjab and nearby Jammu and Kashmir, and is likely to bring thunderstorms and rain to many northwestern regions.

Temperature Likely to Rise Soon

While the cool weather has provided temporary relief, it may not last long. The IMD has predicted a sharp increase in temperatures in the coming days.

Dr Srivastava explained that from Friday onwards, the weather is expected to clear, leading to a rise in temperatures. Maximum temperatures may increase by 6-8°C in the western Himalayan region and by 8-10°C in the northwestern plains of India.

This means Delhi and nearby areas could soon return to typical summer conditions.

Air Quality Shows Improvement

Amid the pleasant weather, Delhi also witnessed an improvement in air quality. The Air Quality Index (AQI) was recorded at 93, which falls under the ‘satisfactory’ category. This is a positive sign, especially considering the city’s usual pollution levels.
