Influenza virus H1N1 is making headlines again after the detection of more than 1700 cases of H1N1 in Delhi this year. The Centre has asked people to stay alert as the virus can show similar symptoms to other common illnesses
The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has identified the early signs and symptoms of H1N1 infection
Delhi has reported over 1700 H1N1 cases this year, prompting the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare to advise vigilance against flu-like symptoms. The virus spreads person-to-person, and while most cases need rest and fluids, severe symptoms or breathing difficulties require prompt medical attention and potential antiviral treatment.
Symptoms of H1N1 infection are:

- Fever
- Cough and sore throat
- Runny or stuffy nose
- Headache
- Body aches
- Muscle or joint pain
- Feeling tired
- Loss of appetite
- Diarrhea
While most infections are mild, influenza may cause more severe symptoms such as difficulty in breathing in older people, young children, pregnant women, and people with medical conditions like asthma or diabetes. People with symptoms similar to influenza should see a doctor to determine whether they have influenza or another type of infection.
How does H1N1 Virus Spread?
H1N1 is one of the strains of Influenza A virus and is now referred to as seasonal influenza. It spreads from person to person when they are exposed to droplets released from the cough or sneeze of an infected person. It can also spread through close contact with an infected person.
People living in enclosed spaces with frequent exposure to others are particularly vulnerable to the infection.
How to treat H1N1 Infection?
Most people with influenza recover on their own with bed rest, fluids, and medications to reduce fever and alleviate pain. However, oseltamivir, an antiviral drug, may be prescribed to people at greater risk of developing complications or those with severe influenza.
Further, antibiotics are not effective against influenza as it is a viral infection. Similarly, patients are discouraged from taking any other drugs for influenza unless prescribed by a doctor.
People experiencing difficulty in breathing should seek medical attention immediately.
Since most influenza infections are mild, people should take fluids and adequate rest and consult a physician if symptoms persist. On the other hand, the surge in the number of infections in Delhi has raised concerns among health officials. As such, people in Delhi are being urged to seek medical help at the first sign of infection.
