Former Delhi Chief Secretary Rakesh Mehta, top IAS officer who planned for the 2010 Commonwealth Games, has been found dead at his Noida residence by police today. He was aged around 74 or 75 years.
The Noida police has taken up the case as a suspected suicide and is currently looking into the circumstances surrounding it. The police received a tip-off about a supposed suicide note which Mehta left behind in his flat at Kendriya Vihar-2 Society, Sector 82. According to the note, he cited mental and health-related problems. Police are looking into the contents of the note and any forensic evidence found in the flat.

Sumanti Mehta, his wife, was in Dehradun visiting their son when she became alerted that something was wrong when Mehta did not respond to repeated phone calls. She flagged this down with the police via Dial-112 and the Phase-2 police station arrived at the apartment only to find the door locked from the inside. The police gained entry by forcing the door open and found Mehta inside.
The house was sealed off for forensic examination while an inquest and post-mortem was carried out before handing him over to the family. Mehta was cremated at Delhi’s Lodhi Road crematorium on September 7th.
Mehta was a 1975 IAS batch officer who served as Delhi’s chief secretary from 2007 until his retirement in November 2010 in the tenure of Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit. He oversaw a period of intense infrastructural development in Delhi ahead of the Commonwealth Games, which included roads, transport, power and civic services.
Prior to his post as chief secretary of Delhi, Mehta held several key posts in the state including commissioner of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi.
Police said the case would look into the contents of the note, any forensic evidence, call records and post-mortem report to determine the cause of death. So far, no foul play has been suspected while the final conclusions would be drawn after examining the evidence.
