Allegations of sexual harassment against a girl from Jamui district, Bihar, have resulted in a new bout of politics with RJD’s leader Tejashwi Yadav criticizing the state government for its poor handling of law and order and security of women and girls.
Following sexual harassment allegations against a girl in Jamui, Bihar, on September 19, RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi criticized the state government’s law and order, as police identified five individuals, arresting three minors.
The whole fiasco started after the viral videos of the sexual harassment allegations made their way on social media. The police have registered an FIR and arrested a number of people including three minors.
Tejashwi Yadav Raises Questions Over Women’s Safety
Commenting on the Jamui case, Tejashwi Yadav described the matter as very distressing and raised queries over government statements about security of women in Bihar.
The reference was made by Yadav to previous statements by Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary regarding freedom of movement for women at night. He suggested that the case of Jamui creates doubts about safety of girls/women while traveling or going out in the night.
As per Yadav, issues related to safety of women are not restricted to road travel only. While talking about schools, hostels, homes and others, he pointed towards increase in incidents of harassment/attack on women in the state.
The statements have been made in an attempt to politically criticize the Bihar government and can be treated as allegations made by the opposition.

‘Government Is Trying To Suppress Issues’, Says Yadav
Yadav also accused the government of attempting to downplay or suppress incidents instead of taking strong action against those responsible.
He alleged that the state was witnessing a wider law-and-order problem and referred to crimes such as murder, robbery and chain-snatching while questioning the government’s response.
Calling the situation “gunda raj”, the RJD leader alleged that the administration had failed to provide adequate security to people in the state.
These claims are politically contested and are separate from the ongoing police investigation into the Jamui incident.
What Police Have Said About The Jamui Case
The incident reportedly took place on September 19 at around 7 pm in the Jamui area.
Police said the woman was identified after the video circulated online. Her statement was subsequently recorded and an FIR was registered.
Investigators then located the alleged scene of the incident and reconstructed the sequence of events using the available evidence. Police said five people have been identified so far, while efforts are continuing to identify others seen in the footage.
Three people have been detained in connection with the case. Police have indicated that they appear to be minors, estimated to be between 14 and 17 years old, although their ages are yet to be formally verified through documents.
An SIT has also been formed to investigate the case. Police said they have initiated the process of removing the viral video from social media platforms to prevent further circulation and protect the victim’s privacy.
Jamui Case Turns Into Political Flashpoint
The case has now become a political issue in Bihar, with the Opposition using it to question the government’s record on women’s safety and law and order.
For the victim, however, the immediate concerns remain the investigation, privacy and accountability. The police inquiry will determine the sequence of events and establish the individual responsibility of those involved.
Rahul Gandhi Calls Incident ‘Deeply Disturbing’
Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi has strongly condemned a disturbing incident in Bihar’s Jamui, where two Class 10 students were allegedly stopped and harassed by a group of people on a public road.
Reacting to the video, Rahul Gandhi said the incident was “deeply disturbing” and questioned how a group of men could stop and allegedly harass two minors in a public place.
In his post on X, Gandhi said the incident should not be described as culture and linked the behaviour to what he described as patriarchal attitudes towards women’s freedom and choices.
He also demanded that everyone involved in the incident be identified and prosecuted under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, and called for swift justice.
Gandhi also questioned the Bihar government’s responsibility for the safety of women and girls on public roads, particularly after the incident reportedly took place during the evening.

NCW Takes Suo Motu Cognisance
The National Commission for Women (NCW) has also taken suo motu cognisance of the incident and sought action from the Bihar authorities.
The commission has called for steps to identify and apprehend those responsible and has sought a report from the state authorities. It has also urged people not to circulate material that could compromise the privacy of the minor victim.
The investigation is continuing, with police looking for the remaining suspects and examining the available video evidence.
