In a shocking incident in Mumbai, a video went viral where an auto driver made lewd remarks and harassed a female passenger. The incident was quick to go viral on social media, with many tagging Mumbai Police and urging for strict action
In the video, the auto driver can be heard telling the woman: “Pe**s ekdum strong ho gaya hai, aap khud dekhiye, ek baar haath lagakar dekho.”
The video, which was posted by the woman on Instagram shows her stepping out of the auto in a rush after the remarks were made.
She also tagged Mumbai Police, and soon, so did many netizens on X and Instagram.
Questions over women’s safety
The video gained traction as many expressed shock and disbelief over harassment happening in Mumbai, which is often considered to be a safe city for women.
“This is shocking, Mumbai is supposed to be safest city for females in India,” wrote one user on X.
“What nonsense is happening in Mumbai. Will [Mumbai Police] take any action against this Maniac?” asked another user on X.
In 2025, according to the National Annual Report and Index on Women’s Safety (NARI), Mumbai was ranked among the safest cities for women.
The report stated that Kohima, Vishakhapatnam, Bhubaneswar, Aizawl, Gangtok, Itanagara and Mumbai “lead national safety ranking, often correlating with higher gender equity, infrastructure, policing, or civic participation”.
Police launches investigation
Mumbai Police has launched an investigation into the incident. Replying to the viral post on X, the police requested for contact details for the probe.
Many netizens also jumped in by revealing the license plate number visible to them in the video, demanding strict action against the driver.
