After enduring another day of intense summer heat, several parts of Hyderabad witnessed heavy evening thunderstorms on Saturday, leading to waterlogging, traffic snarls and a sharp change in weather conditions across the city.
Heavy evening thunderstorms hit Hyderabad on Saturday after days of heat, causing waterlogging and traffic snarls, especially in western areas like Miyapur (43.8 mm) and Shaikpet (41.8 mm). This pre-monsoon activity precedes the expected arrival of the southwest monsoon in Telangana within the next few days.
Rainfall was particularly intense in the western and northwestern parts of Hyderabad, where showers arrived during peak weekend travel hours, disrupting traffic movement and bringing temporary relief from soaring temperatures.
Western Hyderabad Records Highest Rainfall
According to data released by the Telangana Development Planning Society (TGDPS), Serilingampally and neighbouring western localities received the highest rainfall during the evening spell.
Miyapur recorded the highest rainfall at 43.8 mm, followed closely by Shaikpet with 41.8 mm. CB CID Colony in Kukatpally’s Chandanagar circle received 31.3 mm of rain. Other areas also experienced significant showers, with Madhapur recording 29.8 mm, while Mehdipatnam and Golconda each received 28.5 mm.
The rainfall transformed weather conditions within a few hours, replacing the afternoon heat with strong thunderstorms and cooler temperatures.
Temperatures Nearly Touch 40°C Before Storms Arrive
The thunderstorms followed a particularly hot day across Hyderabad, with several localities reporting temperatures close to the 40°C mark.
Amberpet emerged as the hottest location in the city, registering a maximum temperature of 39.8°C. Chandrayangutta, Charminar, Rajendranagar, Mehdipatnam and Chandanagar also experienced intense heat, with temperatures hovering near 40°C.
The combination of high daytime temperatures and moisture in the atmosphere contributed to the development of the evening thunderstorms.
Traffic Hit Across IT Corridor and Key Roads
The sudden downpour created traffic congestion in several busy parts of Hyderabad, especially in the western IT corridor.
Motorists faced delays in Madhapur, Gachibowli, Kukatpally, Miyapur and Jubilee Hills as rain coincided with weekend travel. Water accumulation on roads and reduced visibility further slowed vehicular movement in many stretches.
TGDPS figures showed that Karwan recorded the highest cumulative average rainfall among Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) circles at 19.7 mm. Mehdipatnam followed with 19.5 mm, while Jubilee Hills registered 17.9 mm.
Monsoon Likely to Advance Into Telangana Soon
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) clarified that the rainfall currently being experienced in Hyderabad is due to pre-monsoon thunderstorm activity and not the southwest monsoon.
However, weather conditions are becoming increasingly favourable for the monsoon’s advance into parts of Telangana over the next two to three days. The IMD has predicted light to moderate rain or thundershowers across many parts of the state during the coming week.
These weather events may be accompanied by lightning and gusty winds reaching speeds of 40-50 kmph. The department has also forecast a drop of 2°C to 3°C in maximum temperatures over the next four days.
Hyderabad, Rangareddy and Medchal-Malkajgiri districts continue to remain under yellow thunderstorm warnings.
Weather experts believe the southwest monsoon could reach Telangana, including Hyderabad, between June 11 and June 13. Until then, residents are expected to witness the familiar pre-monsoon pattern of hot afternoons followed by thunderstorm activity during the evenings.
