Rumours of former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan have surfaced after a US-based Pakistani journalist claimed that the cricketer-turned-politician may have died in prison.
Wajahat Saeed Khan, an Emmy-nominated journalist, told his YouTube viewers on August 10 that three senior military sources at the Army’s General Headquarters in Rawalpindi informed him that Khan “was no longer with us”. However, he admitted that the sources could not independently verify the claims.
Rumours regarding the death of former Pakistan PM Imran Khan surfaced after journalist Wajahat Saeed Khan cited unverified military sources. His family and party report being denied access while he serves a sentence for the Al-Qadir Trust case.
He repeatedly said during the broadcast that he hopes the news was not true.
His claims have arrived at a time when Khan’s family, legal team, and party members have been sounding the alarm for weeks about being kept at arm’s length from the 72-year-old politician. His sisters and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf leaders keep hitting brick walls when they request access, and the party is demanding an independent medical check-up.
Khan has been behind bars since August 5, 2023, serving a 14-year sentence in the £190-million Al-Qadir Trust corruption case. His wife Bushra Bibi was sentenced to seven years in jail in the same case in January 2025. Further, Khan also faces more legal battles over the May 9, 2023 protests when PTI supporters stormed military installations.

Amid the rumours of his death, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi has said that over 20 lakh people are ready to hit the streets.

“Alhamdulillah, our people are united and ready. We have more than two million people. The Pakistani PM’s advisor, Rana Sanaullah, must know that when people come out in such numbers, no one will get a chance to control them, nor will they be able to. I see a lot of anger among the young people, and they will come out in huge numbers. Our preparations are firm,” India Today quoted Afridi as saying in a clip posted by veteran Pakistani journalist, Fakhar Ur Rehman.
The PTI has already announced a long march toward Islamabad on September 27, with threats of earlier protests if Khan’s family and doctors continue to be shut out.

“On September 27, Pakistan will see how many people come out and with what passion and determination. Pakistan’s youth are fed up. They are angry with the system and with all the institutions… Pakistan is in a terrible state, but their priority is to keep Imran Khan in isolation,” he added.
He has threatened to protest outside the Supreme Court if the PTI MPs are not allowed to meet the jailed leader.
However, this is not the first time that death rumors around Khan have hit the headlines. Last November, similar speculations spread like wildfire when his family could not get to him. The rumours were finally put to rest on December 2 when his sister Uzma Khanum met him at Adiala Jail and confirmed he was physically okay, though kept in isolation.
It all started after The Afghanistan Times ran a story claiming Khan had been killed inside the jail, with his body allegedly moved out.
