Harmanpreet Singh Scores Twice
India continued to put pressure on Malaysia after the break. Shilanand Lakra increased the lead in the fourth quarter with a field goal, leaving Malaysia with a difficult task in the closing minutes.
Harmanpreet then scored his second goal of the final through another penalty-corner conversion. The goal completed India’s 5-1 victory and sealed another Asian Games hockey title.
India Defend Asian Games Gold For First Time
The victory created history as India successfully defended its Asian Games men’s hockey title for the first time. It was also India’s fifth men’s hockey gold medal at the Asian Games. India had entered the final after beating Pakistan 4-3 in a tense semi-final.
Direct Qualification For LA 2028 Olympics
The Asian Games hockey champions receive a direct berth for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics. The International Hockey Federation had confirmed before the tournament that the men’s and women’s gold medallists would qualify directly, while other top teams would move into the Olympic qualifying pathway.
India’s success also completed a historic hockey double at the 2026 Asian Games. The women’s team had earlier defeated China 1-0 to win gold, meaning both Indian hockey teams finished the Games as champions for the first time in the same edition.
