It is reported that an Indian Army soldier who got injured during the 1999 Kargil War reportedly committed suicide in the Karnataka state after spending many years waiting for land allocation from the government.

Injured Kargil War veteran Shivananda Reddy allegedly committed suicide on August 28 in Chintamani, Karnataka, reportedly due to a 24-year delay in land allocation promised by the government after his 1999 injury and subsequent disability.

This act happened on August 28 at the Inspection Bungalow (IB) located at Chintamani town, which is situated in Chikkaballapur district.

As per sources, it is said that Shivananda Reddy, a former soldier, drank pesticide as he got frustrated with the delay in land allocation.

Veteran Injured During Kargil War

Reddy had joined the Indian Army in 1987 and remained in the service for about twenty years. In the year 1999 when the war broke out in Kargil, Reddy was deployed in the Poonch area of Jammu and Kashmir.

During his tenure as an Army officer, Reddy met with a serious accident, where he suffered from a major fracture in his leg. Due to the accident, Reddy became permanently disabled.

Reddy retired from the Army in 2004.

Land Grant Allegedly Recommended After His Service

According to reports, the senior officials of Reddy suggested his name for being allotted land according to the scheme that is applicable to those injured servicemen or soldiers who have served the nation.

The allotment of the land was reported to have been pending for many years.
It is reported that Reddy had approached the government authorities several times in connection with the issue.

In spite of these efforts, the land was not allotted to him.

The issue reportedly took about 24 years, and Reddy became very much frustrated with it.

Veteran Allegedly Consumed Pesticide At Inspection Bungalow

On August 28, Reddy allegedly consumed pesticide at the Chintamani Inspection Bungalow. After the incident, police and local officials rushed him to a nearby government hospital, where he was admitted for treatment.

His condition was not immediately known.

The circumstances surrounding the incident are being investigated, while officials are also expected to clarify the status of his land allotment request.

Questions Over Delays In Veterans’ Welfare

The incident has raised concerns among local residents and veterans’ groups over the lengthy administrative process reportedly faced by Reddy.

For a soldier who sustained a serious injury during the Kargil War and later retired with a disability, the alleged 24-year wait has drawn attention to the difficulties veterans can face while trying to access welfare benefits.

The case has also renewed questions about how quickly government promises made to former servicemen are implemented and whether pending applications are adequately tracked across departments.

What Happened During The Kargil War?

This war took place between India and Pakistan in the year 1999 because Pakistani armed forces and infiltrators had captured strategic positions on the Line of Control in the Kargil area.

There was an army operation by the Indian forces in order to regain these strategic positions. This war continued for several weeks and claimed hundreds of lives of Indian soldiers, while many came back permanently injured.

Several benefits for the soldiers and their families were announced by different governments in the postwar years.

Vets organizations always pointed out some cases where there had been delay in the benefits that were announced.
