An 18-year-old NEET aspirant from Karnataka who died by suicide after appearing for the medical entrance examination had allegedly told her family that she scored 92 per cent in her Class 12 PUC exams. However, after her death, her father checked the marks online and discovered that she had actually failed the examination, adding a heartbreaking twist to the case.
The student, identified as Bhagyashree, had appeared for the NEET exam on May 2. Days later, she was found hanging at her home.
An 18-year-old NEET aspirant from Karnataka, Bhagyashree, died by suicide; her father later discovered she had failed her Class 12 PUC exams, contrary to her stated score of 92 percent, adding a tragic dimension to the incident.
Initially, her father Rajashekhar believed that his daughter was doing well academically and had secured excellent marks in the PUC examination, whose results were declared on May 21.
“She had passed the PUC exam with 92% marks. There was no distress or problem in our family, and we were living happily. She had performed well in NEET and everything was going well,” he had told media shortly after her death.
Father Later Discovers Bhagyashree Had Failed
However, after checking her Class 12 marksheet online, the family reportedly realised that Bhagyashree had not passed the examination.
According to reports, she scored 45 marks in Physics, including 30 internal marks, while in Mathematics she secured 24 marks, including 20 internal marks.
Officials said the student had high expectations regarding her PUC results and may have been emotionally disturbed after the outcome.
An emotional Rajashekhar later said, “She was happy with the family. She had told us she scored 92 per cent in PUC. Now she is gone… whom should we blame?”
The family reportedly stated that they do not wish to accuse anyone in connection with the incident.
No Suicide Note Found Yet
Police have registered a case under the jurisdiction of the Station Bazar Police Station.
Officials said no suicide note has been recovered so far, and further investigation is underway.
The incident has once again raised concerns around academic pressure, competitive exams and student mental health.
NEET Stress and Student Suicides Under Spotlight
The case comes at a time when several incidents linked to NEET-related stress have been reported from different parts of the country.
Recently, a NEET aspirant in Rajasthan allegedly died by suicide after reportedly becoming distressed over the cancellation of the NEET-UG 2026 examination.
The National Testing Agency (NTA) had cancelled NEET-UG 2026 earlier this month following allegations of irregularities and paper leaks affecting more than 22 lakh aspirants nationwide.
Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan later announced that the re-examination would be held on June 21 and that NEET would move to a computer-based format from next year.
