The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert across more than 14 districts in Karnataka, warning of rain, thunderstorms and gusty winds of 30 to 40 kmph over the next 24 hours, even as Bengaluru remains outside the immediate rain zone.

The alert covers Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, Belagavi, Dharwad, Kalaburagi, Gadag, Haveri, Yadgir, Shivamogga, Chikkamagaluru, Hassan, Kodagu, Chamarajanagara and Mysuru, where light to moderate rain with thundershowers is likely at isolated places.

IMD issued a yellow alert for rain, thunderstorms, and gusty winds (30-40 kmph) in over 14 Karnataka districts through the next 24 hours, with activity expanding until April 27; Coastal Karnataka anticipates continued hot, humid conditions.

IMD has also said hot and humid conditions are likely in Coastal Karnataka over the next five days, even as thunderstorm activity continues across interior districts.

Meteorologists have linked the current weather pattern to a trough or wind discontinuity extending from east Vidarbha to the Comorin region, passing through Telangana, Interior Karnataka and Tamil Nadu at about 0.9 km above mean sea level. An upper air cyclonic circulation over coastal Tamil Nadu at around 1.5 km altitude is also influencing moisture flow and instability over parts of the state.

Districts On Alert For Rain And Thunderstorms

According to IMD, the weather activity is expected to expand gradually across regions between April 23 and April 27.

In Coastal Karnataka, rain is likely in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi during this period, along with continued hot and humid conditions in Uttara Kannada.

In North Interior Karnataka, thunderstorms are likely in Belagavi, Dharwad, Gadag, Haveri, Kalaburagi and Yadgir, with the system likely to extend to Vijayapura, Bidar, Raichur, Koppal and Bagalkot by April 26 and 27.

In South Interior Karnataka, districts such as Shivamogga, Chikkamagaluru, Hassan, Kodagu, Mysuru and Chamarajanagara are likely to see isolated thundershowers, with the rain band expected to widen later.

IMD has warned that these spells may be short but intense, accompanied by lightning and strong winds. Possible impacts include temporary power disruptions, minor traffic congestion and damage to harvested crops kept in the open.

Residents in affected districts have been advised to stay indoors during thunderstorms, avoid taking shelter under trees and unplug electrical appliances. Farmers have also been cautioned against leaving crops exposed.

Bengaluru Weather

Meanwhile, Bengaluru is expected to see mainly clear skies, with daytime temperatures around 36 to 37 degrees Celsius and minimum temperatures near 22 to 23 degrees Celsius, indicating warm and dry conditions for now. This consistent weather pattern suggests warm afternoons and relatively mild nights, with dry conditions prevailing across the city till April 27.
