Former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee was detained by Delhi Police on Saturday while staging a sit-in protest against Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar near the South Avenue bus stand in New Delhi. Her detention came amid heightened security in the national capital ahead of the Cockroach Janata Party’s (CJP) protest at Jantar Mantar.

Former West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee was detained by Delhi Police on Saturday near New Delhi’s South Avenue bus stand while protesting CEC Gyanesh Kumar; police also detained approximately 500 people, including CJP leaders, to prevent a planned protest at Jantar Mantar.

Banerjee had earlier indicated that she might join the CJP demonstration, which is seeking the removal of Gyanesh Kumar. Police had denied permission for the protest and deployed security personnel across the New Delhi district to prevent protesters from reaching the designated venue.

Around 500 Protesters Detained Across Delhi

Delhi Police detained around 500 people as demonstrators attempted to reach Jantar Mantar despite the denial of permission. Several protesters were detained at locations including Connaught Place, while others were sent back by security personnel.

The protest was scheduled to begin at 10.30 am on Saturday. Police and paramilitary personnel were deployed at key intersections and approach roads. The New Delhi district was divided into 20 sectors, with senior officers monitoring the situation.

Stone-Pelting Reported Near Akashwani Bhawan

Tensions escalated near Akashwani Bhawan on Imtiaz Ali Marg after some protesters allegedly toppled barricades and threw stones at security personnel. According to officials, around 25 to 30 protesters crossed the barricades and attacked the security personnel.

Two police personnel were injured in the incident, and some protesters were detained. Security personnel also chased demonstrators who attempted to regroup at different locations.

CJP Leaders Also Detained At Delhi Airport

CJP leaders Abhijit Dipke, Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka were detained at Delhi airport upon their arrival in the national capital.

As police moved protesters into buses, several demonstrators continued raising slogans against the police. Some of those detained also shouted “Inquilab Zindabad” while being taken away.
