Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Thursday addressed concerns over the proposed delimitation exercise and Women’s Reservation Bill, saying that misinformation is being spread, especially in South India.

Amit Shah

Union Home Minister Amit Shah assured Southern states won’t face disadvantage from the proposed delimitation, citing potential seat increases, while opposition INDIA bloc leaders worry about reduced representation and oppose linking delimitation with women’s reservation.

He assured that no state, including those in the South, would face any disadvantage due to delimitation.

‘No State Will Be at a Loss’

Speaking on the issue, Amit Shah said that fears about reduced representation for southern states are not correct.

He explained that the delimitation exercise will ensure fair representation and that all regions will benefit from it.

To support his claim, he shared expected seat increases for several states:

  • Tamil Nadu – 20 seats
  • Kerala – 10 seats
  • Andhra Pradesh – 13 seats
  • Telangana – 9 seats
  • Maharashtra – 24 seats

He emphasised that these numbers show that southern states will not lose out in the process.

Opposition Raises Concerns Over Representation

Despite the government’s assurances, leaders from the opposition INDIA bloc have strongly opposed the delimitation plan.

They have expressed concerns that linking delimitation with the Women’s Reservation framework could reduce the political representation of southern and north-eastern states.
The opposition, however, clarified that it supports women’s reservation but disagrees with the way delimitation is being introduced.

Key Opposition Leaders Meet in Delhi

The decision to oppose the delimitation move was taken during a meeting of INDIA bloc leaders at the residence of Mallikarjun Kharge in Delhi.

The meeting was attended by several prominent leaders, including:

  • Rahul Gandhi
  • Tejashwi Yadav
  • Supriya Sule
  • Sanjay Raut
  • Kapil Sibal

During the meeting, leaders agreed to oppose the delimitation proposal while continuing to support the implementation of the Women’s Reservation Act.

Why Delimitation Is Being Debated

Delimitation refers to redrawing constituency boundaries and reallocating seats based on population.

The current debate is focused on how this exercise may impact different regions of India.
Opposition leaders argue that states that have controlled population growth, especially in the South, could lose representation if seats are allocated strictly on population.

Government vs Opposition: Key Differences

Delimitation will ensure fair representation and no state will be at a disadvantage.

It may reduce representation for southern and north-eastern states and create regional imbalance.
