India prime minister Narendra Modi hosted Chinese President Xi Jinping on Saturday in New Delhi for bilateral talks aiming to improve India-China relations and expanding cooperation in trade and investment.
Indian PM Narendra Modi hosted Chinese President Xi Jinping in New Delhi for bilateral talks focused on improving relations, expanding trade, and managing border concerns following recent military tensions.
The meeting came took place just few hours after Xi Jinping arrived in New Delhi for two-day BRICS summit. It his first visit to India after seven years.
“I welcome you to India,” Modi said in his opening remarks at the meeting.
Focus On Restoring India-China Relations
People familiar with the matter said Xi’s visit presents a key opportunity to further normalise relations that came under severe strain following the eastern Ladakh military standoff.
In the last few months, the two sides have taken a series of measures to rebuild their relationship after it came under severe strain following the deadly Galwan Valley clashes in 2020.
Xi’s visit to India comes on the heels of several high-level exchanges, including the Special Representative dialogue in Beijing between National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi.

Border Issues Remain A Concern
Despite the recent efforts to improve ties, concerns remain over aggressive Chinese military posturing along the Arunachal Pradesh sector.
Doval had held the Special Representative talks with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang late last month. The discussions focused on delimitation of the frontier, sustaining work on trans-boundary cooperation and maintaining peace along the Line of Actual Control (LAC).
Both Doval and Wang are the designated special representatives for the boundary talks mechanism, which was established in 2003 to comprehensively address the dispute over the India-China border spanning 3,488 km.
Modi And Xi’s Previous Meeting
Modi and Xi held wide-ranging talks on August 31 last year on the margins of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in the Chinese city of Tianjin.
The latest meeting comes as both countries continue efforts to stabilise relations and expand cooperation in areas such as trade and investment, while working to maintain peace along the disputed border.
