The Punjab government is stepping up efforts to strengthen organ transplant facilities in government hospitals. In a major achievement, the Punjab Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences (PILBS) in Mohali has successfully performed three liver transplant surgeries within a week, marking a significant milestone in the state’s public healthcare system.

Addressing the media at PILBS, Health Minister Dr. Balbir Singh said the achievement reflects the Punjab government’s commitment to providing advanced and super-speciality healthcare services through public institutions under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann.

The Punjab government has advanced liver transplant services at PILBS Mohali, delivering three successful transplants within a week and planning a hub-and-spoke model to extend care. The initiative highlights public healthcare strengthening, organ donation stories, and upcoming kidney transplant services to broaden access.

The three recent liver transplant cases also highlighted inspiring stories of family support and organ donation. In these cases, a wife donated a portion of her liver to her husband, a mother donated to her daughter, and a son donated to his father, giving them a new lease of life.

With these latest surgeries, PILBS has now completed a total of five successful liver transplants, strengthening its position as a key centre for advanced liver care in the state.

The Health Minister said the government is working on a statewide model to expand liver transplant services. Under the proposed hub-and-spoke system, PILBS Mohali will serve as the central hub, while government medical colleges will function as supporting centres for patient identification, screening, referrals and post-transplant care closer to patients’ homes.

Dr. Balbir Singh also announced that kidney transplant services will soon be launched in Mohali and Patiala, further expanding access to advanced transplant care within Punjab’s government healthcare network.

He said the state government is strengthening transplant-related infrastructure in government medical institutions to ensure that patients receive specialised treatment without having to travel outside Punjab. Efforts are also underway to develop a robust organ transplant ecosystem across government medical colleges and hospitals.

Highlighting the expansion of services at PILBS, the minister said that 239 FibroScan tests were conducted at nominal charges during August, while 139 indoor patients received treatment and care at the institute. Plans are also in place to add 170 more beds, which will significantly enhance the institute’s capacity to provide specialised liver and biliary care.
