After a distinguished 36-year career in India’s power sector, Rajat Chandra Sarmah has embarked on a remarkable second chapter as a writer. Retiring in 2022 as Executive Director of a Central Public Sector Undertaking, Rajat transitioned from leading large-scale engineering projects to crafting stories shaped by decades of observation, experience, and reflection.
During his professional career, Rajat played a significant role in planning and executing major infrastructure initiatives across hydroelectric, gas-based, solar, and wind power sectors. Known for his leadership in engineering management, Rajat guided teams responsible for complex power projects that contributed to India’s growing energy infrastructure.
Beyond project execution, Rajat also made lasting contributions during his engineering career. He initiated the Plant Resource Centre at the Kopili Hydroelectric Project and oversaw the construction of a nearly 600-foot bridge across the Doyang Reservoir, connecting a remote village in Nagaland and improving accessibility for local communities.
Rajat is a Fellow of LEAD International and the Institution of Engineers (India), reflecting his commitment to professional excellence and sustainable development.
A New Chapter in Literature
After retirement, Rajat turned to writing, drawing on decades of professional experience and life observations. His literary journey began with A Sanguine Tale: Unfolding the Life of a Project Engineer, a reflective narrative inspired by life around large infrastructure projects and the human stories behind them.
The book received the Golden Book Award and earned Rajat the Emerging Writer Award at KLC 2024. It has also been translated into six languages, expanding its readership across diverse audiences.
Encouraged by the positive response, Rajat continued writing and has since authored several books:

Recognition and Literary Achievements
Rajat’s work has received several notable recognitions.
Beneath All This Sky was named Fiction Book of the Year at KLC 2026 and received the Dickens Medal of Literary Excellence. Meanwhile, A Symphony of Life received the SahityaSparsh Award 2026.
Rajat is also a recipient of the International Tagore Award in Literature, presented by DRDC.
In addition to his books, Rajat has contributed to over thirty-five literary anthologies, with his writings appearing in international literary journals, print anthologies, newspapers, and online literary platforms.
Continuing the Journey
Today, Rajat continues writing actively, drawing inspiration from life experiences, social observations, and the diverse human stories encountered throughout his professional and personal journey. His work reflects a unique blend of engineering insight, human experience, and reflective storytelling.
