Actor Rajpal Yadav is in for another jail term after the Supreme Court asked him to pay ₹5 crores by September 9 in his long-drawn legal battle.
Rajpal approached the Supreme Court just before the time ran out to surrender as per the earlier order of the Delhi High Court. The Supreme Court has directed him to make the payment of ₹5 crore to the Supreme Court registry by Wednesday. The actor will have to serve the prison term again if he fails to make the payment.
The Supreme Court has ordered actor Rajpal Yadav to pay ₹5 crore by September 9 to avoid serving a three-month jail term, related to seven cheque bounce cases filed over his 2012 film ‘Ata Pata Laapata’.
The case against actor Rajpal Yadav was heard by the Supreme Court on September 8 and was scheduled to be heard again on September 15.
Seven cheque bounce cases against actor
This legal battle is about the seven cases of cheque bounce that were filed against the actor for not paying the dues of his 2012 film Ata Pata Laapata, that he directed and produced.
The film was not a commercial success and all the loans that were taken for the production continued to accumulate interest. The interest rates soared and the case was filed against the actor.
In July, the Delhi High Court upheld the actor’s conviction and sentenced him to three months in jail. However, he was able to get bail on March 18, 2026.
Additionally, the court also levied a fine of ₹1.05 crore for each of the seven cases, which makes it ₹7.35 crores in total. The failure to pay the fine would extend his jail term to six months. The actor will serve three months as the jail terms for all the cases will be served concurrently.
The actor asked for more time to pay the fine as he found it difficult to raise the money.
Rajpal Yadav has been facing financial difficulties as he was unable to arrange the huge amount required to pay off the dues. Before he was sent to Tihar Jail, he was quoted saying that the case had been taxing for him and he did not have many options. There were reports that Salman Khan and Sonu Sood offered help to the beleaguered actor.
As per the order of the Delhi High Court, ₹7.35 crores will be distributed to the complainants. Out of this amount, ₹25,000 will go to the state from each case while the rest will go to the complainants.
Rajpal Yadav continues to remain a popular character actor who mostly appears in comedy films. He was recently seen in Akshay Kumar starrer Bhooth Bangla and Welcome To The Jungle.
For the actor, the immediate concern is the Supreme Court’s order of ₹5 crore that he has to pay before September 9. Otherwise, he will have to spend three months in the Tihar Jail again.
