A shocking food safety complaint has emerged from Mumbai’s Borivali West, where a customer has alleged that he found a rat in a Mysore masala dosa served at a local hotel.

The incident comes as the Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) carries out a statewide inspection drive against food establishments ahead of the festive season.
The FDA action is being conducted under its “Safe Food, Safe Maharashtra” campaign and is being led by FDA chief Tukaram Mundhe.
Customer Claims He Found Rat In Dosa
According to the complaint, Mumbai resident Amit Trivedi had visited Radhakrishna Hotel in Borivali West with his two brothers and his son to have South Indian food.
Trivedi ordered a Mysore masala dosa. He reportedly ate a few bites before noticing what he claimed was a small rat inside the dosa.
The sight allegedly left him shocked and unwell. He reportedly began vomiting and subsequently approached the Borivali police station to report the incident.
Senior Police Inspector Pushpalata Mandale said the police forwarded the complaint to the Maharashtra FDA. The food safety department then took action against the hotel.
An FDA official said the licence of Radhakrishna Hotel has been suspended for the time being. Further investigation into the complaint is underway.

The alleged incident has raised fresh concerns over hygiene and food preparation standards at eateries, particularly at a time when restaurants and food businesses are seeing increased demand during the festive season.
Maharashtra FDA Finds Major Hygiene Violations At Kyani & Co
The Borivali case comes shortly after the Maharashtra FDA took action against Kyani & Co., one of Mumbai’s oldest surviving Irani cafes.
The FDA inspected the iconic establishment on September 27 as part of its festive-season enforcement drive. Officials reported several hygiene violations in areas used for food preparation and storage.
According to the FDA, inspectors found rat droppings, live flies and dead cockroaches on the premises. Cats were also reportedly seen inside the establishment.
Officials further reported that a significant amount of blood had accumulated inside a refrigerator. An open sewage manhole was also found in the food processing area.
The inspection team reportedly found food products stored directly on the floor, while raw dough was covered with printed newspaper.
Following the inspection, the FDA suspended Kyani & Co.’s FSSAI licence.
The cafe, established in 1904, is known for its old-world character, high ceilings and affordable tea and snacks and is among Mumbai’s historic Irani establishments.
Over 50 Tonnes Of Food Products Seized
The action against Kyani & Co. was part of a much larger Maharashtra-wide food safety operation conducted between September 23 and 27.
During the five-day drive, the FDA said it seized 50,601.78 kg of food products, equivalent to more than 50.6 tonnes. The seized items included sweets, milk and milk products, edible oil, rice, dry fruits, namkeen, farsan, tea, spices, sauces, noodles and wafers.
The total value of the seized products was estimated at around Rs 1.19 crore.
The department said licences of 30 food establishments across Maharashtra were suspended during the drive. Of these, 13 were in Mumbai, six in the Konkan division, eight in the Pune division and three in the Sambhajinagar division.
The enforcement operation also resulted in the seizure of banned products worth Rs 30.93 lakh, according to the FDA.
FIRs Registered, 30 People Arrested
The crackdown also included criminal enforcement. The FDA said 22 FIRs were registered and 30 people were arrested during the operation.
Authorities also sealed three establishments and seized three vehicles as part of the enforcement action.
In Mumbai alone, the licences or registration certificates of 13 establishments were suspended with immediate effect.
The latest action highlights the food safety concerns faced by consumers during the festive season, when the demand for sweets, dairy products, snacks and restaurant food increases sharply.
The alleged rat-in-dosa incident in Borivali, along with the hygiene violations reported at Kyani & Co., has put the spotlight once again on the need for strict food safety checks at eateries and food businesses across Maharashtra.
