IPL 2026 Final Reserve Day Explained: As Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Gujarat Titans prepare for the IPL 2026 final at Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium on May 31, weather remains one of the few uncertainties surrounding the title clash. While forecasts indicate clear skies and a minimal threat of rain, the tournament has robust contingency plans in place should the weather intervene.
Unlike Qualifier 1, the Eliminator and Qualifier 2, the IPL final is allotted a dedicated reserve day. This special provision ensures that the championship match has every possible opportunity to produce a result and crown a winner on the field.
The IPL 2026 final between RCB and GT on May 31 in Ahmedabad has a reserve day on June 1 if weather disrupts play. If no result is possible on either day, the team higher in league standings, RCB, will be declared champions.
If rain or other weather-related disruptions prevent the final from being completed on May 31, play will resume on June 1, the designated reserve day. Importantly, the match will continue from the exact point at which it was halted. The score, wickets lost, overs completed and batting order will remain unchanged, allowing the contest to continue seamlessly.
Match officials will first attempt to complete the game on the scheduled day, even if that requires reducing the number of overs. If sufficient overs are completed for a result, the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern (DLS) method will be used whenever necessary. In the event of a tie, a Super Over can be employed, subject to available time and playing conditions.
The reserve day serves as the final safeguard against weather disruptions. However, if persistent rain or unplayable conditions prevent the match from being completed on both May 31 and June 1, IPL regulations provide a final solution.
In such a scenario, the team that finished higher in the league-stage standings will be declared champions. That rule could prove significant this season, as Royal Challengers Bengaluru ended above Gujarat Titans in the points table. Therefore, if no result is possible across both days, RCB would be awarded their maiden IPL title based on superior league-stage performance.
With forecasts currently predicting dry weather in Ahmedabad, fans will hope the reserve day remains unused. Nevertheless, its presence ensures that the IPL has a clear pathway to determine a champion, even if nature decides to play a part in the season finale.
