Veteran Indian photographer Raghu Rai, celebrated for capturing the many moods and realities of India through his lens, passed away in the early hours of Sunday at a private hospital. He was 83.
His son, photographer Nitin Rai, shared that Rai had been battling cancer over the past two years. “He was first diagnosed with prostate cancer, which was successfully treated. Later, it spread to the stomach, and that too was cured. Recently, the cancer reached his brain, and along with age-related complications, his health declined,” he told PTI.
Veteran Indian photographer Raghu Rai passed away at 83 on Sunday after a two-year battle with cancer and age-related complications. Renowned for capturing India’s realities, his influential work documented the nation’s socio-political and cultural landscape for decades.

Rai is survived by his wife Gurmeet, son Nitin, and daughters Lagan, Avani, and Purvai. Widely regarded as one of India’s most influential photographers, his work documented decades of the country’s social, political, and cultural landscape.
The last rites will be held at Lodhi Crematorium in Delhi at 4 pm on Sunday, where family, friends, and admirers are expected to gather to pay their final respects.
