S. Janaki, one of the most popular voices in Indian cinema, died Saturday, July 11, in Mysuru at the age of 88. The Indian music industry has been left in tears as her untimely death comes as a shock, but her remarkable 48,000-plus songs, across various languages, remain a legend in Indian cinema history.

Legendary Indian singer S. Janaki died in Mysuru on Saturday, July 11, at age 88, leaving behind a legacy of over 48,000 songs sung across numerous Indian languages. Affectionately known as ‘Janaki Amma’, her versatile voice made her an iconic figure in Indian cinema history.

A Musical Journey That Crossed 48,000 Songs

S. Janaki (known as Sistla Janaki) was a singer with great voice range and emotional depth who had an extended career of more than four decades. She has sung more than 48,000 songs for movies, albums, tv and radio making her one of the most prolific playback singers in India.

Her voice resonated in Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Hindi, Sanskrit, Odia, Tulu, Urdu, Punjabi, Bengali and Konkani as well as in a number of other languages. Her remarkable talent for picking up just about any new style of music won her the status of being one of the most versatile singers in India.

She was affectionately known as ‘Janaki Amma’ or the ‘Kokila’ of South Indian cinema and continues to be an iconic figure with songs resonating with every generation.

Family Confirms Her Passing

The news of S. Janaki’s demise was confirmed by her family on Saturday. Her granddaughter, Apsara Vaidula, announced her mother’s death via a touching Instagram post, tributes to the iconic singer as well as a cherished granny.

She wrote, “Dear everyone, it is with profound sadness that I share the news of the passing of my beloved grandmother, the legendary singer S. Janaki. She passed away peacefully, surrounded by the love of her family. While our hearts are heavy, we are deeply grateful for her extraordinary life and for the timeless music that brought joy to millions.”

She further added, “To the world, she was an iconic voice, a musical legend whose songs will live on forever. To us, she was our cherished grandmother whose warmth, kindness and grace touched our lives every single day. We kindly request privacy for our family during this difficult time. Thank you for your love, prayers and understanding.”

A Voice That Defined Generations

S. Janaki’s career has earned her a place in the annals of Indian film music for several of the most iconic tunes. In addition to her acting career as a playback singer, she was an acclaimed music composer who had a significant contribution to the genre of South Indian movies and had an indelible impact in Indian music.

Being a versatile singer across genres, languages and emotions was her forte and she became a composer’s preference, film makers’ choice and audience favourite. It’s clear how dedicated, versatile and great she is at her art form, with more than 48,000 songs recorded.

An Enduring Legacy

The death of S Janaki has no less than a big loss to the music industry in India. Although, her songs and recordings will always be alive within the music lovers. Her legacy will inspire many of young singers to look out for.

From devotional songs to film songs to independent music, her voice will always be cheered and her voice will tell us that why people called her ‘Janaki Amma’.
