A newly formed satirical political movement has stunned observers by overtaking India’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Instagram followers, exploding into a massive digital phenomenon within days of its launch.

The “Cockroach Janata Party” (CJP), operating under the bio “a political front of the youth, by the youth, for the youth”, crossed the milestone of 9 million followers on the platform, eclipsing the BJP’s official handle which stands at approximately 8.7 million. What began as a hyper-ironic internet joke has rapidly transformed into a focal point for youth dissatisfaction regarding unemployment, exam leaks, and political accountability.

The satirical Cockroach Janata Party (CJP), founded by Abhijeet Dipke, has rapidly gained over 9 million Instagram followers, surpassing India’s BJP, fueled by youth dissatisfaction and an alleged remark by Chief Justice Surya Kant, who later clarified his statements were misreported.

The movement is the brainchild of 30-year-old Abhijeet Dipke from Aurangabad, Maharashtra. Dipke, who recently completed a Master’s degree in Public Relations from Boston University in the United States, is a veteran of digital political messaging, having previously volunteered for the social media team of India’s Aam Aadmi Party. The catalyst for the satirical campaign occurred following an alleged courtroom remark by the Chief Justice of India, Surya Kant, during a Supreme Court hearing.

Initial reports suggested that the Chief Justice had compared unemployed youth on social media to “cockroaches” and “parasites”. Rather than rejecting the insult, Dipke launched the platform, inviting young, “chronically online” Indians to reclaim the label as a form of peaceful political protest.

Along with millions of social media followers, the platform has recorded hundreds of thousands of formal membership sign-ups on its website. Amidst the growing digital backlash, Chief Justice Surya Kant issued a formal clarification, expressing deep distress over how his oral observations had been reported. The Chief Justice stated he was pained by the media’s misquotation of his remarks during the hearing of what he termed a frivolous case.

According to his statement, the criticisms were directed strictly at individuals who enter noble occupations, such as the legal profession and journalism, using fraudulent qualifications. He maintained that these individuals “sneak” into social media and other fields, acting as “parasites” within the system.

Rejecting the narrative that he had disparaged the nation’s younger generation, the Chief Justice described the allegations as entirely baseless. He emphasised his immense pride in India’s youth, describing them as a personal inspiration and the foundational pillars of a developed India. However, the official clarification has done little to halt the momentum of the Cockroach Janata Party, which continues to outpace traditional political machinery in the digital space.
