Former Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina is set to deliver her first public address in New Delhi on August 5, 2024, marking two years since her departure, while speakers discuss the political situation, democracy, and extremism in Bangladesh.

Hasina is expected to address supporters in the presence of her son Sajeeb Wazed Joy and former Bangladesh cricketer and Awami League leader Shakib Al Hasan.

Democracy, Extremism Likely to Be Key Themes

Ahead of the address, former Bangladeshi diplomat and intelligence officer Aminul Hoque Polash claimed that extremism had increased in Bangladesh after the fall of the Sheikh Hasina government.

Advocate Shah Mohammed Bakhtiar also criticised the trial against Sheikh Hasina before Bangladesh’s International Crimes Tribunal, calling it a “sham trial.”

The event is expected to focus on the political situation in Bangladesh, with speakers calling for the restoration of democracy in the country.

Mahibul Chowdhury’s Address

Thank you for this opportunity.

Today, here in New Delhi, our hearts are with the people of Bangladesh. Today marks two years since the violent ouster of Bangladesh’s elected government.

When the uprising against our government began, young people were promised that it would lead to a free and united Bangladesh. Instead, many believe those dreams have turned into nightmares. Justice has been replaced by revenge, and hope has given way to uncertainty.

It is time to choose unity over division and dialogue over confrontation. Today, millions of citizens across Bangladesh are struggling with unemployment, while many believe anarchy and chaos have taken hold of society. Too many lives have been affected. We believe democracy must be restored and strengthened.

To the youth of Bangladesh, we say: you deserve a better country-one that offers quality education, meaningful employment, equal opportunities, and hope for the future.

Let us reject the politics of hate and embrace the politics of hope. Let us work towards national reconciliation and the homecoming of Sheikh Hasina through peace, not hostility.

We cannot allow Bangladesh to become a failed state. The future of our nation depends on unity, democracy, and the collective will of its people.
