A total eclipse of the sun was seen by millions of people in Europe on Tuesday as part of the natural phenomena that takes place from time to time. Being the first to take place in 27 years, the event attracted millions of people in Europe, especially in Spain and Iceland, while scientists took advantage of the occasion for conducting research about the Sun.

Europe experienced its first total solar eclipse in 27 years, drawing millions to Spain and Iceland, while NASA deployed WB-57 aircraft and high-altitude balloons for research into the Sun’s corona and its effects on space weather.
One of the most interesting parts of the project was the use of the specially equipped WB-57 NASA aircraft to fly high and observe the moon’s shadow.
Europe Welcomes Millions of Eclipse Watchers
The total solar eclipse attracted many tourists from all over the world to areas located in the narrow belt of totality where the moon totally eclipses the sun.
One of the places where there were very many tourists is Spain where it is reported that up to six million people arrived in the northern parts of Spain and in the Balearic Islands.
There were also warnings issued to tourists to exercise caution since there was an increased threat of wildfire in many places where people were viewing the eclipse due to the heat wave.
It was predicted that the total solar eclipse would be very spectacular in Spain since it was quickly followed by sunset.
Iceland Becomes a Global Viewing Spot
The eclipse also brought an unusually large number of tourists to Iceland.
Around 80,000 visitors were expected to arrive in Reykjavik, a significant number for a country with a population of only about 400,000.
The Moon’s shadow first crossed Iceland’s western coastline before moving eastward across the island.
The occasion also turned into a cultural celebration, with Icelandic singer Björk scheduled to perform a special DJ set at an eclipse-themed event near Reykjavik.
NASA’s Aircraft Followed the Moon’s Shadow
Whereas millions watched the eclipse from the ground, NASA was engaged in an exciting project from the air.
For this purpose, the NASA WB-57 high-altitude research aircraft was used, which had the capability to fly at 50,000 feet and travel at 460 miles per hour.
Unlike the rest who stayed in one place while watching the eclipse, NASA’s WB-57 aircraft kept moving alongside the shadow of the Moon on the Earth, thus being able to watch the eclipse for a longer duration.
Moreover, the aircraft was flying in clear air, thus providing a better view of the Sun.
Why Is NASA Studying the Eclipse?
A total solar eclipse is not only a breathtaking natural phenomenon but also an important scientific opportunity.
When the Moon completely covers the Sun, the Sun’s outer atmosphere, known as the corona, becomes visible. Normally, the corona cannot be observed because of the Sun’s intense brightness.
Scientists study the corona to better understand:
- Solar storms and solar flares
- Space weather that can affect satellites
- Communication and GPS systems
- The impact of solar activity on astronauts in space
NASA says every total solar eclipse helps researchers improve their understanding of how the Sun influences Earth and the wider solar system.
Balloon Missions Also Join the Research
NASA’s research extended beyond its aircraft.
The agency also supported the Nationwide Eclipse Ballooning Project, under which research teams launched high-altitude balloons to study how Earth’s atmosphere responds when daylight suddenly turns into darkness during an eclipse.
The project is expected to provide valuable information about changes in atmospheric temperature, pressure and wind patterns.
Scientists Hope for New Discoveries
Kelly Korreck, Eclipse Program Manager at NASA Headquarters, said a total solar eclipse offers scientists a unique opportunity to observe the Sun in ways that are otherwise impossible.
She noted that understanding the Sun is important because its activity directly affects satellites, astronauts and many technologies that people rely on every day.
The data collected during this eclipse is expected to improve scientific understanding of solar activity and space weather.

For millions of people across Europe, the 2026 total solar eclipse was an unforgettable experience.
For researchers, however, it was far more than a beautiful sight. With advanced aircraft, research balloons and observations from the ground, scientists hope the event will answer important questions about the Sun while helping improve future space-weather forecasting.
