Tamil Nadu schools across private, CBSE and aided categories will soon have to publicly disclose their fee structures, following a major directive issued by the State Information Commission aimed at bringing greater transparency to school admissions and fee collection practices.
The order, passed by Information Commissioner S. Ilamparithi, makes it compulsory for schools to prominently display government-approved fee details on their official websites, school notice boards and admission-related documents. The move is expected to benefit thousands of parents who often struggle to obtain clear information about tuition fees and additional charges during the admission season.
Tamil Nadu schools must now publicly disclose government-approved fee structures on their websites and premises following a directive from the State Information Commission to ensure transparency for parents during admissions.
The directive came after a petition filed by Coimbatore resident Liyakat Ali, who had sought information regarding the approved fee structures of private matriculation schools in the district. According to the petitioner, the information request submitted in 2022 was repeatedly transferred between various departments without a proper response, leading to long delays and confusion.
Following the complaint, the Commission examined the matter and observed that parents frequently face difficulties in accessing authentic fee details approved by the authorities. The Commission noted that a lack of transparency often creates uncertainty during admissions and leaves parents unaware of the officially sanctioned charges for different classes.
In its order, the Commission instructed educational authorities to ensure that every school clearly publishes class-wise fee details in a structured and accessible format. Schools have also been directed to print the fee structure in student application forms so that parents can review the costs before completing admissions.
Apart from digital publication on school websites, institutions must place the information prominently at the entrance or reception area of their campuses. The order applies to private matriculation schools, CBSE institutions and government-aided schools functioning across Tamil Nadu.
The Commission has further directed the Chief Educational Officer of Coimbatore to provide the requested information to the petitioner within two weeks through speed post without collecting any fee.
To monitor implementation, District Chief Educational Officers across the State have been instructed to inspect schools and verify whether the directions are being followed. A consolidated compliance report must be submitted to the Commission before June 15.
Education activists and parents’ groups have welcomed the decision, saying it could help reduce confusion and arbitrary fee demands during admissions. Many parents have long argued that fee-related information is often disclosed only at later stages of the admission process, making it difficult for families to compare schools or plan finances in advance.
The latest order is being viewed as a significant step towards strengthening accountability in Tamil Nadu’s school education system and ensuring that parents have easy access to verified fee information before enrolling their children.
