Voting in Tamil Nadu has officially concluded as part of the ongoing multi-phase Assembly elections taking place across several states. With polling now complete in the state, the focus has shifted to exit polls-but voters will have to wait before any projections are released.

Tamil Nadu concluded voting with 84.56% turnout; exit polls are prohibited until April 29 nationwide under Election Commission rules, with violations punishable by law to ensure election fairness.

Exit Polls Cannot Be Released Yet

Even though Tamil Nadu has finished voting, exit poll results cannot be published immediately. The Election Commission of India has placed strict restrictions on the conduct and release of exit polls during the election period.

This rule ensures that early predictions do not influence voters in states where polling is still ongoing. In this case, the second phase of elections in West Bengal is yet to take place, which is why the restriction continues.

What Are the Rules on Exit Polls?

As per the Election Commission guidelines, exit polls are completely banned during a specific period.

  • Exit polls cannot be conducted or published from 7 AM on April 9 to 6:30 PM on April 29
  • Results will only be released after the final phase of voting ends nationwide

The Commission has made it clear that any violation of these rules will lead to strict action.

Penalty for Violating Exit Poll Ban

The Election Commission has warned that breaking these rules is a punishable offence under the Representation of the People Act, 1951.

Anyone found conducting or publishing exit polls during the restricted period may face:

  • Up to 2 years of imprisonment
  • A fine
  • Or both

This strict approach is aimed at maintaining fairness and neutrality in the election process.

Strong Voter Turnout in Tamil Nadu

Despite the restrictions on exit polls, Tamil Nadu recorded impressive voter participation.
According to official data, the state saw a turnout of 84.56% by 7 PM, indicating strong public engagement in the electoral process.

Among all districts, Karur recorded the highest turnout at 92.15%, showing exceptional voter enthusiasm.

While voting has ended in Tamil Nadu, the overall election process is still ongoing in other states. This means exit poll results will only be available after the final phase concludes.
Until then, voters, political parties, and analysts will have to wait to understand possible trends and outcomes.
